Last nights update cause anyone else problems?

So I recently built my own computer. I installed all the most recent drivers and I am running on Win 7 64 bit home premium. I also installed all the recent windows updates, like 170 or so of them. I only installed a video game so far and a program called ds3 tool/motioninjoy that allows a ps3 controller to be used on the pc.

Anyways, everything was running smooth until last night, or this morning rather. I remembered seeing an update before I logged off last night, 2 of them actually. This morning I try to fire my game up and the video card is running like crap. Great graphics still but very very choppy and slow, too slow to play. I checked my internet connection, and just said to hell with it and restored to before last nights update. Now everything is running fine.

My question is, first, why do windows updates cause problems sometimes? I thought hotfixes were kinda untested, and updates were the ones that they know will be fine. Or is it the other way around. Also, will I have to keep restoring everyday now. I mean, when I shut my system down tonight, wont it prompt the same update again since I now do not have it? any way to bypass this?

On a side note, I downloaded (without my knowing) a piece of spyware/adware called search protect by conduit. It happened due to my ps3 controller program. I thought I'd be fine because I have microsoft security essentials running but i just did a scan and it said there are no threats (not a threatening malware I guess tho, just annoying). I just want to get everything unneeded off of my brand new build. When I try to uninstall SP, it says that I do not have enough access and to contact the system admin. However, my user control is the admin, so what the hell?

Also, another weird thing that happened earlier today. Before I did the restore, I tried making some small changes like programs that run on startup etc. When I shut down, the monitor turned off like the computer was already shut down, but the lights on my tower were still on and fans were still running. Never seen this before, just another weird thing I wanted to point out just in case anyones had that happen to them and if there is a reason.

Well it ended up being a driver update for my video card. I was convinced that it was windows update because last night the game worked fine. The I shut down and got an update. Then I started the game this morning and it was screwy. I ended up downloading a program from nvidia to let me know when an update is needed. But yeah, had nothing to do with windows updates at all it looks like. Perhaps this will help someone later down the road.

My advice would be never to have any program set so that it installs updates automatically, you should always set things so you are prompted that an update is available and can then choose whether and when to install it (and can also decline "extras" that are often checked for installation by default but which could conflict with other stuff you already have). That applies to Windows, Nvidia, Adobe, Flash etc.

Also remember that MSE is only an anti-virus program and that you need to complement it with an anti-malware program like Malwarebytes.

Ok now I am getting concerned. The whole day yesterday was fine After a restore and updating the video card driver. So I shut down last night. Again, the updates go through. This morning I boot up and watch youtube. 20 mins into the video it starts acting choppy and slow, but the audio plays normally. The video and me clicking from one process to another was very slow as if I were using a very old,very used computer. This computer is 5 days old! Is there a way to uninstall an update? I just did a restart and its working fine again, I just want to know what the core problem is so I dont have to constantly restart my computer.

Also, not auto updating sounds great and all but what if its an update I really need. Eventually I am going to choose to get the update and then I will end up installing ones I skipped anyways because I wont remember which is which. Could this be a failing processor/video card? Thanks

Update part 5 I removed the supposed problematic updates and now my machine works fine again. May be too soon to speak, but so far so good. I am almost positive it is the win update that screwed my system, namely my graphics card. I did a pc performance before and after the update removal and my graphics card went from a rating of 2.0 to a rating of 7.9 lol. Crazy how bad a win update can screw your system. This makes me never want to install an update again, although I know I will have to eventually.

I have nvidia on my machine also but am completely in the dark as far as 'drivers' are concerned . I have gotten notice in Windows Update about it but have read that we shouldn't use that but instead go to nvidia. I don't have the foggiest idea of what to look for there so am wondering about your statement of: "I ended up downloading a program from nvidia". Is that a scan of some sort that tells you what or if you need an update? Could you post a link or something for me?

My advice as an Nvidia user would be to stick with any drivers that are working ok. There's rarely any benefit to the average user in upgrading every time new drivers come out, and they're often beset with compatibility issues. At the very least don't have them on auto-update and do make sure you read the feedback on the official driver board before you install any that you feel you do need. Get them from Nvidia, not Microsoft.

I'm a little confused(happens fairly regularly when dealing with computers)
1/ Are you sure the search protect by conduit came with a Windows update?
2/Have you/how did you remove it?
