Lost Files after Win7 Upgrade

Hey Barman

Thanks for the stay up. Where are you?

No luck on the special permissions solution.

I can propagate the permissions of a folder downwards through the folder tree. ie "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from the object" - if I were to do this to the D drive folder - I know I can access in the d drive folder itself, as well as in other folders on the d drive. Perhaps I'm at the stage where trying this is worth it.

Ok, now this is truly weird.

I propagated all user permissions from the D Drive on downwards. This did not show me any of the files.

What it did do was unlock a folder in the root called $inplace.~tr and all the sub folders beneath it

I now have $inplace.~tr\Machine\DATA\My Documents\ ... and in there are all the folders and files I have been missing.

I'm going to go and have some lunch and think before I do anything else.

Ken

P.S. Trawled the web and found several references to this folder - all telling people to DELETE IT!!!
P.P.S Copying this folder to an external now - which I'll connect to another machine and check contents - before attempting to integrate back into the MyDocs folder.
P.P.P.S Thanks All.

I would clean install 7 after lunch, then use the setting up 7 guide in my sig to spank 7 into shape. Great that you fixed it though. Scan the HDD when you have the chance. I'd recommend MSE for protection.

Hi Ken,

It's now morning in the UK, and following your discovery this does point to a glitch during install

my understanding is that the $inplace.~tr folder is a temporary storage used during an in-place upgrade, I would normally only expect to see this on the system drive.

Did you have your "My Documents" pointed to in your old install using the "location" tab? If so this would make a little sense - with the transfer from this temporary file failing on the install, after partly writing the MFT with the "correct" location for the contents of the "My Documents" folder.

As you said the Deletion of the $inplace.~tr folders is all over the web but most are linking back to the same source on annoyances org.

I did find this entry which does have a familiar ring to it ....

Annoyances.org - Question about 'What are the $INPLACE.~TR and $WINDOWS.~Q folders for in Windows Vista?' (Windows Vista Discussion Forum)

Hopefully you now have your files back, and assuming this then I would advise that you, as suggested, try a fresh install, as soon as you can, preferably after building install media from the download files.

I have never totally trusted the academic download installer method of installing an OS from within itself, has too many opportunities to overwrite things.
