I have used Macrium reflect on a Win 7 32 bit machine to image the HD on a potable USB HD and it's wonderful, no it's a Godsend.
I just bought a Dell XPS 15Z laptop winch is a core I7 8G Ram with Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed Macrium Reflect 4.2 on the machine.I thought I'd image the hard disk on my portable USB HD . Macrium performed flawlessly. When I needed to restore, I inserted the restore CD and booted, Macrium asked for the image file so I connected the portable USB HD but Macrium did not see it so I tried the other two USB ports and pressed "Refresh" but it did not see the HD. I tried to insert a flash drive that had a copy of the image but it did not see it either!
What am I doing wrong?

I assume that you are using the Linux rescue CD. That can be problematic. One thing that you can try is completely powering off, attack the backup drive while powered off and then boot the CD. That worked for me sometimes.
The other thing you can do is to use the WinPR recovery disk which is much better at detecting your disks. Normally this would require rather a large download but whs has created a prebuilt ISO which you can find here. FileSwap.com : Macrium 5.0 WinPE.zip download free. All you need to do is to burn it to disk.

I don't think this is the issue, but a few things to check over : are you plugging your portable drives into a USB3 port by any chance? If so, try a USB2 port.

No. The images created with 4.2 can be restored with a V5 recovery disk and vice versa, but it is a good idea to keep backup software up to date as it handles more recent hardware.

I need to ask about the Windows7 animated logo that appears at startup. I'd like to squeeze a few more seconds out of my startup speed so I need to disable this animation. I tried going to msconfig>Boot tab an checcking the No Gui boot box, but the animation is still there. I removed it off my desktop a few years ago but I've totally forgot how to do it.
