I am using Outlook 2007.

I click on a vendor's websites contact link .

Outlook is launched and I compose the message. When I click on the send button, Outlook closes and the message just goes to the Outbox and will remain there until I reopen Outlook and manually send the message.

Why does this happen?

Is there a way to setup Outlook so that I don't have to manually send the message ?

Thanks

After reading your links , I think I understand the problem. When I visit the vendor's website to contact them, Outlook is not yet launched . So when I hit send , it goes into Outbox like I am working off line . I guess there is no good solution for this situation.

A bit confusing. In your first post you said outlook launches when you click on the vendors website and now you say it does not?. How would you be able to click send if it didn't launch in the first place?

You need to create your own thread for that.

I was not sufficiently clear in my original post:

What I meant to say was that when I clicked on the vendor's email link , Outlook's Compose message pane comes up with the vendors email address appropriately filled in , so I typed the message and then hit send button.

I suspect that Outlook was not actually launched but I was working in offline mode which may be the reason why the message was not sent . Outlook was not launched before I went to the vendor's website to send them the email.

edit:Is Outlook configured for POP3, imap, Exchange...

Task Manager is your friend :-)

Outlook 2007 (and maybe other versions) seem to operate differently when "launched" versus when running in the background.

The video bellow illustrates what you are describing (I think). Process monitor is setup to show any network traffic generated by Outlook. There is no send/receive activity after I press send in the test message.

I thought that enabling "Perform an automatic send/receive when exiting" would fix the issue - no joy.

I guess that you will just have to keep Outlook "launched"... or maybe others know of a fix for this annoyance.

BTW, as you can tell from my file naming convention, I made 4 videos. In the first one, there was no send/receive traffic before or after I hit send on the test message and I failed to show the network traffic within process monitor after launching Outlook the normal way. In the second one, I had trouble with the junk/test e-mail account - they made me reset the password due to "unusual activity" (repeated test e-mails to a bad domain?). I got things recorded as desired in the 3rd video (the first video in this post) - but by then the test e-mail account was temporarily suspended. So, I setup another junk/test e-mail account with another provider - hence the different e-mail servers shown within process monitor for the 4th video (the second video in this post).

If I get time - I'll test with Outlook 2010.

Edit2: Outlook 2010 fails to send just like the videos above show
(even with "Perform an automatic send/receive when exiting" is checked)
odd thing though - I could not capture any network traffic for Outlook 2010 via process monitor??

Taking your hint about looking at Task Manager , this is what I found.

Start Task Manager at the beginning of a session.

Outlook not started ie no Oulook in the Task Manager Process pane

After visiting a website and clicking on it's' contact us email link, I notice from the Task Manager that indeed Outlook.exe is added to the processes.

I then typed a test message and hit the send button. Exit Webpage.

Outlook.exe stopped ie no longer in the Task Manager Process pane.

Manually launch Outlook and now its added to the process pane, Message transferred to Outbox.

Message automatically sent from Outbox after about 1 minute delay.

I believe the Message would not have been sent until I manually Start Outlook.

Yep - that is the annoying norm.

Now that we have documented the problem so well - let's see if people can suggest settings to try and remedy the issue. I don't think that it is an offline/online issue as my videos show that outlook will communicate with the e-mail servers while running in the background - it just will not honor the "sent before exit" setting while in that mode :-(

The work around that I suggested in my rather wordy post is to never close Outlook.

The first thing I do when I am on the computer is to check for emails but usually I turn Outlook off after the email session. Well I will change my routine a bit and not turn Outlook off until the computer session is over. Thanks
