The demise of Windows will most likely not come from the desktop linux emergence, but from cloud operating systems. This article is far from being another flamebait making baseless predictions – I will explain step by step what lead me to my conclusion.

Reviewing all sorts of web 2.0 start-ups and more recently, cloud operating systems I’ve realized what Microsoft is so scared about. Microsoft is scared about losing marketshare; losing Outlook customers to webmail services such as GMail or Yahoo! Mail, losing Word and Excel customers to Zoho and Google Docs. The trend is more than obvious.

Sorry, but I wouldn't even consider running my applications on someone else's computer. I wouldn't trust google or anyone else with that kind of power. I'd rather go back to pencil and paper. Way too much like big brother for me. Might just as well have a gov. agent looking over your shoulder whenever your on the computer, IMHO.

Yes, there is a place in the cyber universe for cloud computing. However, most of the software development projects I'm involved in will likely never live in a cloud entirely. A lot of what I do involves what is called embedded applications and systems. These are real-time motion control and simulation, along with high resolution 3D visualization. I'm usually pushing state-of-art hardware pretty hard. There's no time for being in a cloud - mostly. I say mostly because one demo system I did last year was a tightly coupled motion control and flight hardware simulation where we send a real-time data stream across the US so it could be viewed in near real-time in a digital theater on a 20 foot screen with 4K projector. Very cool. It really impressed the customer Cyber clouds are good for traditional business applcations and similar consumer applications. Just not what I mostly do.

I'm not specifically referencing future laws. Just that one day, technology will have progressed to the point that the Cloud will be THE 'platform.'

Kinda like how some employers no longer have paper paychecks. They REQUIRE direct deposit into a bank account.

Some of us still get paper checks................... But I work for a small company.

Anyways, there may indeed come a point where cloud computing is the ONLY platform to work from. Everything would be linked through a mainframe in the city, or company. The only problem there is that your data can be monitored (unless you encrypt, like I would) and it would be much easier to take down the system.

What, again?

This has been talked about SO many times. In the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and today. It seems every 5-10 years someone decides that this is the way to go, and makes all sorts of predictions. And yet it NEVER happens. Why? Because it's never non-trivial.

Right now, today, I can buy a Terabyte of home storage for $75. If I want another Terabyte? Another $75. I can fill it with pr0n, home videos, whatever. If I want to spend $750, I can buy 10TB and fill it with crap. And it'll be FAST. Play my games, stream my video to my XBox, etc.

The cloud computing model sounds great until you realize that for them to provide any sort of reasonable performance is prohibitively expensive. To provide shared storage that they auto-scale, they can't use standard SATA drives. They have to use SAS at a minimum, more likely SAN storage on Fiber Channel. This puts the price at $10+ PER GIGABYTE. Trust me, we've priced it out!

Then you have to have enough bandwidth to deliver high speed (10MBit+) to every user! That's RIDICULOUSLY expensive.

The cost-to-end-user is SO high that it's not a viable model for home use. For some businesses? Sure I think cloud computing is coming.

But in the late 90's Bill Gates was talking about this as well. Back then the numbers weren't 1TB, they were 10GB. But they didn't have good fiber SANs either, and SCSI was even more expensive.

And in another 5 years, we'll have 100TB drives. The model keeps increasing exponentially, and the ability to deliver those services cheaply is still limited.

And I haven't even BEGUN to address the fact that nobody will let you store your pr0n online. And that I wouldn't store my personal data anywhere but at home, even if you paid me to do so. And that my apps will always stay local, no matter what.

ppp is right. I also think that it will never come. Too expensive and while technology improves, older technology lower it's costs, but people want new technologies, not older ones. So, 10 years ago, 20 GB. of storage was a lot but too expensive to bring it via on-line services. Now, it's equally expensive serve 10 TB. of data, but people's needs also increases, so the 20 GB. mentioned before are too nothing for sharing actual technology that people uses nowadays.
It's a race between coming-out technologies and users needs. More years will pass, more technologies will appear at the same price that old technologies had when they were new and people will always want to use and (sometimes) abuse of the new ones.
There are my reasons for thinking that way.
But, if someday that kind of technology become affordable for companies to bring that kind of services, I think that more than one company that develops that kind of technology will be at border of bankruptcy for more than obvious reason. Like an ecosystem: the balance will broke up. :shock:

yur trippin. 5 years? dont think so. Internet delivery throughput speed is everyone's limit for cloud computing. People do want to Own their own computing power, not rent it from the biggest name that owns the rendering servers. MS is not afraid of cloud computing, just waiting for the primetime to throw money at it; and until 1 gbit/sec becomes mainstream for a household's internet, the cloud won't be appealing.

People want their quad monitors at 5120x3200 apiece; something pretty revolutionary needs to be designed for any kind of shift like what is drawn out here...

The thought of going 100% cloud is a pretty derastic expectation.
