Monitor Dell ST2210: I cannot adjust settings with front panel buttons

I want to adjust in the first instance the brightness and contrast controls by using the buttons on the front panel. No way can I either move from one adjustment to the other, nor can I operate the up/down arrows to alter the brightness and contract settings. Dell talks of using the OSD menu ( presumably accessed by the front screen buttons) but again 'no luck', so I can't do any tests they want done.

I'm utterly stumped. Anyone able or willing to help? Please!

How are you connecting the monitor? VGA? DVI? HDMI? Looking at the manual the adjustments seem to be only for VGA.

I have a couple of monitors (an ACER and a Viewsonic) and with DVI interface the "on the monitor" controls do not work.

HDMI: I must have missed that in manual!

But why on earth does Dell choose not to enable adjustments for HDMI connections?

When in patient mood, I'll get the VGA cable out

It seems its that way in many brands, since the two I have do not adjust (at the monitor) with DVI connections.

But, both HDMI and DVI are digital connections. VGA is Analog. The Digital probably bypasses the analog front end (and probably where the controls are) and the analog to digital conversion. My theory may not be right but it sounds good.

Seems the industry is disjointed,as surely most folk want to use HDMI/DVI and to be able to adjust settings as well. Or does it think the large majority are colour blind, and thick as two short planks:sarc:
