Moving files within a folder

Do you have the folder set to show icons? I just tried it with a folder of my photos set to 'list' and, sure enough, auto arrange is greyed out. I changed to 'icons' and auto arrange is back ready to take the tick out.

it works fine for me in Photos,Videos, and Music, as long as they're set to show as icons.
It doesn't work in Documents.......but I don't want it to work in there!

Yes, that's it. Note that 'tiles' becomes 'extended tiles' and also that after manually sorting you can click on 'align to grid' in View to tidy up the page.

Question....

Now.......... if anyone has found a reg-edit trick to fix the window resizing, the fantastic new feature that give's us the same size and place window for every program Windows 7 well almost be palatable.... someone did suggest changing a value in the reg string that addressed it but that didn't work.
The only thing I've found so far is a shell program that works but it's slow on opening.
Anybody know the guy who created the auto arrange reg fix ????

~Cheers~

I can't get this to work. I don't understand step 8
8. Go back to the Bags key, export the branch to a REG file.
When I try to export, it comes up to my documents. How do I navigate to "a REG file" ? and it's looking for me to name the file. Does it matter what I call it? I tried to finish the steps but didn't get the "auto arrange" back. Please help! As a photographer, it's vital for me to be able to arrange images within a file. Thanks.

The fix was for something else, but it also brings back Auto Arrange which you can disable and lets you Drag & drop files.
Go here: How to Disable Full Row Select in Explorer in Windows 7? - The Winhelponline Blog scroll down to registry fix, download the zip file, open it, apply it.
Open a page of pics. set to icons then click on view.
You should now see Auto Arrange - remove the tick and you should now be able to drag and drop photos.
Hope it works for you. Be aware, if you change from icons to anything else,it won't work.

I don't know why it's not working for me. I'm using windows 7 ultimate. Followed instructions but nothing changed even though I got a confirmation it was applied. Tried rebooting. Got "Error reading TrayIcon1->Visible: Cannot Create System Shell Notification Icon" Open file of photos, it's set to large icons, clicked on view and it looks the same. There is no "auto arrange" listed

Sorry it doesn't work for you. Mine looks like this after clicking on 'view'

I remember that it didn't work for me straight away. I think I opened and closed the pictures window a few times.

Did you read what he said to do under Workaround? Before proceeding, first set the FullRowSelect registry value to 0. Refer to our earlier article for more information on the registry edit.

Another option is to try out a third party file manager that doesn't have the restrictions of explorer, there are a whole bunch of them out there, many of them free (like Freecommander).

WE do not want to SORT, that is the issue, we want to........

Drap and drop in the ORDER we want is what we are asking for, CAN one move shortcuts, files, etc WITHIN a folder in Win 7 Home Premium?

Example. Win 7 allows us to create a folder, put in shortcuts, and then CALL it a TOOLBAR.
That toolbar I created will post on the START MENU.
This allows us to "get around" Microsoft taking away the customization of the old shortcuts on the Start Menu to used program we use frequently .

So, I have a CREATED TOOLBAR which is a Folder I created in C: called "--" listed first in folders and it is full of SHORTCUTS to my favorite PROGRAMS and is on the START MENU withOut pining.

I could have PINED them but like the custom toolbar better.
I have a PW program, I created a shortcut and placed it in the "--" folder but WANT is at the top of the folder but I can not get the "P" at the top.

I want it in the TOP of the folder. SORT will make me have to change its name and I dont want that.

I think my problem is the same as the guy with the VIDEOS listed in the wrong order.
WITHOUT "sorting", how do we move the shortcuts, etc in the ORDER WE WANT withIN any folder?
