I have experienced all types of buggy playback from those 2 DLNA players, both WMP and WMC which either half the time cant find servers, says cant open the file, or the playback just locks up playing super slow mo.

We were watching a video with WMP, and half way thru it simply slowed way down. So I restarted and it refused to seek to the middle, so restarted WMP again, and then the server was not longer there. I verified the server can serve fine testing immediately with VLC. If I reboot the PC, then WMP sees the DLNA server again.

I know the DLNA server works because it works fine with VLC and KODI (but VLC can not seek the stream) and also KODI can play ok and can seek back and forth in the video. But I just don't like it as it is sort of heavy.

I want a lightweight player that works well. I thought WMP could do the job, but the windows programmers disappointed me. There must be some kind of video player for DLNA that works reliably.

Look up MPC-BE(or HC). Do you mean too many options are in KODI, you can disable all the stuff you don't need like pictures, programs launcher ect.
