Need Help With Router Backup Tips

I've got my new Win 7 Ultimate machine ready. I need way to back it up regularly.

I was thinking of buying a new router with a USB port and perhaps an encrypted external hard drive and then just copying the data to this drive over the network.

Has anyone setup something like this before and can you recommend a good router for this setup.

Thank you

You might be better off buying a dedicated NAS device. I have a DIR-655 and the USB SharePort function is not very reliable. The D-Link forum is full of complaints of failed attempts to do what you propose. I only ever tried to use it to network my laser printer and that was a fail. It's not so much the Router but the software used to connect to the USB port. I don't know if other brands of routers are any better but I would stay away from D-Links products. If poke around here > Real Help For Your Small Network - SmallNetBuilder you might find some good info.
