Solved Need some help finding out what is doing this in Win7 HP 64-bit.

Alright call me paranoid but I never seen win 98, me or xp do this so its not me being paranoid I hope. Anyway here is the issue, sometimes when my pc has been idle for like 15 min or so, my HDD starts being used like crazy, now auto disk defrag is off, system recovery is on, search indexer is pretty much turned off, auto virus scans are not turned on. Bascally I am wondering what the heck is suddendly using my HDD like mad, it tends to stop if the mouse is touched. Its been doing this since I first got the pc but still its been bothering me. I've also ran virus scans and my system comes up clean so I doubt its a virus.

Any idea what is doing this? if not, know of any program that can like, track what program is accessing the hdd over a timeframe (when I hit start till I hit stop) so I can try to figure out whats going on here. Thanks all.

Edit: I think I may have figured it out, might have been windows defender that was set to scan around 2 AM, and only when system is idle. So this might be why.

Take a look at Windows Defender definitions update,how often and under which circumstances is it scheduled to run?

DWM

DWM is responsible for this behaviour on my PC.

Windows will write a disk record about every second as part of it's keep alive process. I suspect something else is using the disk. It could be updates, indexing, Prefetch or defrag. You can run Windows Resource Monitor (Resmon) and click on the Disk tab to see what processes are using disk in real time. Below that pane is Disk Activity that shows what files are in use. It's not uncommon for Windows to use idle time to run maintenance.
