Solved Need to adjust a files properties under progrtamfiles(x86) in win7HP

WAY new to win 7... think i made a damn mistake buying Windows HOME Premium .. the restrictions didnt seem to matter for my needs.. but the User Control seems way limited.

All i want to do is change the properties of a file under C:\Program Files (x86)... ( specifically.. i want to go under the Security tab.. and Deny..read and execute on it )

again.. just a fyi.. i have Windows 7 home premium ( sry im unemployed and the oem was cheap )..

i Did create the adminstrator account w/ the net use command..

Logging into the ADMIN account.. it doesnt allow me to make the change.. I want to make a change in the security tab of a file.. to DENY it to execute.

I also have the indexer turned off.. ( had superfetch off also.. ( im coming from Vista x64 ).. but turned it back on.. odd that my system almost seemed to go faster w/ it OFF..rofls )... sry side tracked.. I was logged in as admin also.. to undo the indexing flag on all the files under c:\.. that didnt work either.... granted i have disabled the index service.. so shouldnt really matter on the index attribute right?

ok back on track .. am i missing something that i need to do after i log in as admin to change this file attribute?.. is C:\Program Files (x86) a special case on rights?.. do i need to create a c:\apps and install the program there.. to allow myself to do it?.. kinda like how Worldofwarcraft wanted to be put in a completly different location in Vista for rights issues.

so just to reiterate.. this is doing this in the way gimped Win 7 Home premium.. ..

I Think i turned off UAC.. but all i really have is a slider telling me it wont bother me anymore.. but i;ve confirmed in other areas that it says UAC is not running.

Oh.. and Really MS.. no included email client.. rofls.. making me download Windows Live Mail .. i think i 'switched users' fast.. and WML freaked out.. and ate itself.. already had to do a "reinstall/Fix" on it.. after like 4 days of even originally installing it and win 7..rofls

What file? And why do you need to change the security permissions on it?

I changed from Avast ( on Vista ).. to what seemed to test a little better Avira.. I just wanted to stop the Pop ups / spam it keeps hitting me with ( which seems somewhat often )... I have blocked it in Comodo from connecting to the outside... but i saw some forums that stated to block it from executing... thus there seems to be Internal ( spam ).. popups also...

Yes.. i know.. its free.. but if it keeps doing it.. ill just revert back to avast.. dont remember spam popups in that.. ..

I would think of buying Avira.. but i dont want all the bundled jazz it comes w/.. i just want a good antivirus.. .. like in comodo.. i dont want the defense + jazz.. i just want one thing to do its job well.. and Only that one thing.. problems seem to arise when programs become bloatware .. Winamp comes to mind in that regards ..

If its a pain to change it.. ill just live w/ the popups.. im not paying for it after all.. or maybe ill just revert back to avast... worked well on Vista x64.. i just noticed i was logged into my admin account.. and i couldnt do a lot of tasks that required admin access.. so i found it odd.. and wanted to know how to do it.

Why not just rename it? avnotify.exe.kill...

The permission settings and what not are exactly the same as they were in Windows Vista...I don't see how it can be all that different for you.

I just remember a possible issue with rights on vista in regards to the programfilesx86 dir.. a lot of programs wanted to be put in something like C:\apps\... ie worldofwarcraft didnt want to be in the x86 programfiles dir for a rights issue that i never bothered to fully investigate.. i just put it where it wanted.

The AVira thing is really a moot point... I;m just noticing that i appear to be logged into my administrator account.. and i DOnt really Have admin rights...

With win 7 home premium all i really have to change user rights is :
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts ... right?

my admin account Does appear to be an Administrator..

I just find it odd that when i log in AS that account.. i am unable to do certain - what i would call - administrator functions.

Am i the only idiot that purchased the home premuim x64 version.. rofls... oh and the UPG cost to pro is like 89$.. GO Micro$oft..

i logged into my admin account.. and tried to rename the avnotify.exe .. and it gave me the error "You require permissions from administrators to make this changes to this file."

i Understand WHY protections are in place.. i just found it odd i couldnt change that w/ "admin" rights..

Ill keep searching for stuff on gaining admin rights via win 7 home premium...

also gonna try installing apps in a c:\apps.. see if i have full rights there.. ( as i would be the owner..etc )

I thought i read that it may be a rights n owner thing in programfiles(x86).. but ill keep hunting..

I dont want to undo protections that in place to stop a virus from wreaking havoc..etc...

Its just that apparently im learning the restrictions placed on the admin account.. i guess.

I Also foind it odd i could not remove the Index attribute from my C: drive files.. while i was logged in as adminstrator.. it said i needed admin rights to do so :[

Having Home Premium has no effect or difference concerning your issue.

With UAC on you are not running with Administrative power, you should keep UAC on. You get Administrative power when you get the UAC dialog box. Even then with Administrative power certain directories like Program Files and Windows have special permissions applied to them. Locked down to "TrustedInstaller" which is the servicing component of Windows.

A solution i found for taking the Index attribute off was just to turn UAC back on.. rofls.. ( which is fine ).

.. but it appears program files (x86) is an odd case for rights.. most people talk about changing the owner to your account.. then giving rights to your account for those files..

or just installing apps in c:\apps or so.. but appearently programs still want to put some data in program files x86..

kinda old.. but talks a little bit about same problem
