New Laptop, Wanting to Run these games without LAG

I Am buying a new laptop soon and i need some guidance. I Want a laptop that can run Assassins creed 3, guild wars 2 and Far Cry 3.

My Budget is £700. I'm from the UK. I Would like it even more if it's by HP

I would make sure it has a i5 CPU minimum as well you'll want to get the ram to a 6-8 gb minimum more if it will take it and then pay close attention to getting a the best internal GPU that you can afford. I would think you can find this with a HP for sure....for 700 pounds....that's your shopping to do. When you get the HP rig then you'll want to get rid of all the bloatware that HP is famous for.

Then the next step would be to purchase a external hard drive case for the stock 2.5 and replace it with a 256gb or larger SSD drive and place the old HDD in the usb 3.0 enclosure and lock and load !

I have seen this very upgrade for Mac's and I'm sure there are solutions for a pc so I will say yes but would have to research completely and it could take some time. I have a fast 1 tb usb 3.0 hooked to my HP Probook mine has 8 gb of 1333 ram and only an i3 but it scores well in the video with no separate video.

Sandy based laptops are worth looking into solely for the integrated GPU. It'll probably be more powerful than some of these mobility cards/chips.


What's going to be your biggest problem OP, is finding one with a half decent GPU. The 6370M for example, is a weak card. Gameplay would be shit tbh. But if you found one with an older gen CPU, but beefier GPU - beefier GPU wins.

(Search for benchmarks etc with the exact GPU you'd be looking at. Then try and find it's desktop equivalent. This makes it easier culling duds.)



700 isn't a lot to go on when it it comes to decent game capable laptops. The titles you want to play will most likely have to be played at low/medium settings.

Of course whats acceptable to one, isn't acceptable to another.


(Once upon I time I considered 20-25fps 'playable'. Now I have PC's that can do 60FPS with max settings and find 20-25fps to be an intolerable slideshow now.)


Basically, you'll find a compromise because you have to. Does it need to be a laptop?

Laptops obviously offer mobility, but for the price you get far less in comparison.

While this may be a worthwhile trade off in many instances, gaming is not one of them. You need alot of GPU power and thats where many many laptops, especially in this price range, will fail.

Regarding the ram and mobo working together I would first go to the mobo mfgr's. site and they will have tested and approved makes and models of ram. Now that doesn't mean that's the only ram that works but you need to decide the speed, brand and size you want to go with. Trusted brands will be Crucial, Corsair, G Skill, Kingston and the like. Notice the speeds that the mobo will accept normally higher speeds will required a overclock or setting change in the bios and not all mobo's and cpu will extract all of the speeds listed, so just because it says with an overclock you can install 2133mhz ram doesn't mean you'll net that. Another issue to consider is the heat sinks and height of the ram modules and could that impact an aftermarket CPU cooler especially air coolers?

Once again. For another £10 -15 u could get tge 3570k which is the follow up and would game better and be more energy efficient etc

Don't forget to include a 128gb SSD in the build and do your clean install directly to it. These days Intel, Crucial, Samsung and other SSD's are very reasonably priced and many are on sale for less then $140.00 and if you can limit the install to just the OS and a precious few programs then you could get away with a 64gb drive and they are dirt cheap, just do it and you'll thank me later !

Oh I have a suggestion for your graphics card. You can buy Nvidia Geforce GTX "660 TI" which is better than 660 without the TI for a bit more .

just in case you are considering what other options are out there.

as to the desktop, as suggested above get the 3570k, your getting the z77 board anyway so you may as well get the cpu that is meant for it

psu is a good choice, ram is something you can upgrade as you go, 2 x 4gb sticks is great to start with and you can get 2 more another time if you want to upgrade to 16gb and use the 4 channel ram.

the gpu is something you need to ponder on, the nvidia gtx 660 is a nice card. you can compare it to the 7870, most benchmarks show one or the other doing the same thing though oddly i did notice the 7870 has higher min fps in most games tested, this is most likely a driver related issue though and not a direct result of the gpu being any worse or better.
