New To Macrium,Some Questions

After using windows own backup system for years i decided to use Macrium yesterday after reading good reviews.I installed the program on to my D partition which i use for non Microsoft programs as i like to keep my C partition for operating system files only.After creating a system image on my external hardrive i have noticed Macrium has placed a folder onto my C partition with two folders inside Common and Reflect,why was this folder placed there and what is it for?.Also i noticed on my external drive that i have the Macrium backup in the folder i created but there is also now some random folders (boot,Drivers,efi) and files scattered around (bootmgr,bootmgr.efi,PEVersion,Version,x64),can these be collected up into a folder to tidy things up or do i need to keep these as they are.

Im new to Macrium so not sure what all these files are as when using windows backup you just get the backup file installed on the external drive.

I use Macrium (paid version). I have the Reflect folder in the Documents folder and it looks like a log file for the backups I've done.

If you created a Bootable disc with Macruim and did the WinPE version that is probably why its there. I don't know about moving them to a new folder, may cause an error at some point. Would be best to ask Macrium support about these. Macrium is a UK company.

If the files in the Reflect folder in documents have .xml extensions, most of those files are used to allow one to do a backup using the settings from a previous backup without having to manually enter them each time. The .xml files are created on the last window before the backup actually starts unless you deselect it. The files are only 8KB each so you can ignore them. If having the Reflect folder in Documents bothers you, you can probably just hide it and Macrium Reflect should still be able to find it (disclaimer: I haven't actually tried that with Macrium Reflect but I have with other programs in the distant past).

Programs are System files so I recommend installing them on the C: drive. That will allow you to back them up in one fell swoop along with the rest of the System files (I also recommend imaging to backup System files and using a folder/file syncing program, such as FreeFileSync, for backing up data files). That also will avoid having non-data files and folders being scattered across your data drives.

If your C: drive is too small to accommodate all of your programs, you can install your programs on a separate drive or a partition on a separate drive (just don't mix program and data files). However, you will have to image that drive or partition separately. Why create more work for yourself?

Thanks for the reply,there are no .xml files in the Reflect folder however i have only done one backup so far so that is probably why.The Macruim folder on the C drive isnt a major problem just wondered why it had appeared there when i had installed the main program on the D drive.However the scattered files on my external drive are more of an annoyance any idea if i can group these up into a folder safely ?.

I would say no because, if you move them, how would MR know where to find them. I recommend uninstalling MR and reinstalling it on your C: drive (if you have room on your C: drive, you should do the same with your other programs).

From the experience of others, I gather that splitting Windows and 3rd party programs into separate partitions will create problems, one, of several others, you're posting about. It's best to have OS and 3rd party programs on "c drive", the OS partition, and have Data folders, files, downloads, saves, etc. on "d drive", the Data partition. Less problems, less hassle when it comes time to restore either the OS partition and/or the Data partition.
