I'm still on the 32bit version. Things are pretty good. I haven't given up on 64bit yet, but for now, will stick with 32bit.
I have SATA disks with XPSP3, Win7 32bit (currently being used) and Win7 64bit. Same HW, simply plug the disk in and use. XPSp3 is still much "quicker". I haven't cut over to Win7 full time just yet.
Before I do, I'm considering a HW upgrade that might help. Can you suggest something?
The current HW (to save you re-reading the thread) is a Dell Precision 690. 16GB PC-4200F RAM 2x3.0Ghz XEON (4 cores total). Stock Dell machine, other than the memory upgrade from 4 to 16GB.
I'm suspecting the NVidia FX 3400 driver still, even on 32bit. Graphics is the low mark on performance even on 32bit. I'll entertain suggestions on what to replace it with. Looking for something that 'fits' with the Precision, yet works very well with Win7 on both 32bit and 64bit (as the driver might be the root of all evil on 64 bit too.)
