PC shows no audio device in system tray, Device Manager shows two devices with yellow explanation marks - Code 52 error. Driver details shows default Microsoft drivers in use. Various driver installs attempted. Machine updated from Vista.

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

Hardware IDs
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1106&DEV_E721&SUBSYS_10438345&REV_1001
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_0067&SUBSYS_00670000&REV_1000

one will be the mobo sound, the other the HDMI sound output (onboard graphics / HDMI capability)

Have tried the F8 boot option to ignore certificate signing, was no help.

The default basic function Microsoft HD Audio Codec should only be used if nothing else is available. The PC vendor's audio driver is the preferred as non vendor drivers in many cases either do not work or do not work correctly.

The code 52, along with the digital signing, could also be malware on the PC according to what I see doing a google search.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the sound device and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Also check the box to uninstall drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts try to install the correct vendor sound driver.

VIA_Audio_V6017200_XPVistaWin7.zip was the one I was offered from the Mobo vendor's site. The PC vendor went titsup.com.

I'll try that later v8700 driver - thx.

fixed

after uninstalling, installing etc to no avail I ran sfc /scannow (again) and magically the loudspeaker icon appeared and the yellow triangles disappeared and it is now working.

The various driver installers didn't work, it is using Win7 MS drivers but has got over whatever problem it had in the meantime.

Thanks for the help.
