Windows 7 :
- PC has not been connected to the Internet for over a week, yet
- every evening when shutting down a screen notice appears to not turn off the computer because "1 of 2" or "1 of 3" or some such updates are installing; so
- what is this about? since the supposed updates cannot have been downloaded because there's no Internet connection, from where are they magically appearing again and again?

It's possible that when you lost your internet connection, there were some updates that were downloaded, but not installed. This can occur when the computer is shut down & you receive a warning that updates are installing, before the computer will shut down. The other possibility is that the computer lost internet connection during the download phase & it's still trying to re-establish internet connection to complete the job.

As you have no internet connection this will occur until you get it up & running again. You could open Windows Updates & see if there are any updates waiting to be installed & if you wont have the internet connected again you could hide those updates. If you do hide them & later on reconnect the internet you can Install Hidden Updates from Windows Updates.

Thanks for your response. Appears to me that the issue is that MS is sending updates even as often as daily . . . so will just have to deal with it.

Normally Windows 7 updates come through on a monthly basis these days, although there is the odd one that comes through in between times.

MS Office updates, if you have it installed, can occur from time to time as well. Also if you use Microsoft Internet Security as your AV then there are updates on a daily basis.
