No internet for crossover connection

I want to use a cat5e cable to transfer files between my Win7 pro machine and my vista ultimate machine. I've had no problems using the cable between my laptop (a non Win7 machine) and my Vista machine. When I connected the crossover cable between the Win7 and the Vista, I got the message "Unidentified network, no internet access". I can ping between the two static IP addresses even with the firewall on, but I don't know why I'm not able to use the wired crossover connection. Any ideas?

Hello gemini, welcome to the Windows 7 Forum:thumbsup:

Can you explain what you like to do?

It looks like you have a connection to the Vista machine since ping is working between both machines.

Best regards,

I'd like to transfer some large files from the Vista machine to the 7 using the crossover cable. The machines can connect to each other using the wireless network, but I'd prefer to use the crossover cables because it'll be faster and the wireless on the Vista is unreliable.

Connect your two machines with the Cat5.

Put these in your ipv4s Local Area Network adapter.

Comp A

IP: 192.168.1.6
subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Comp B

IP: 192.168.1.7
subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Then ping one from the other and make sure each replies. After this just share whatever folder u want from either PCs.

The unidentified network is just means you are not internet ready (i don't have the tech terms for u). You may need the usual IP, subnet, Default gateway and DNS IP to have an identified network. if you want to "share" internet connection you may need to have one pc connected to the internet and just bind/bridge your network connections.

Do you have the correct cable for the connection, I'm not totally sure on this but I think for Internet it needs straight through cable and crossover for just connecting two machines.

As I said I could be wrong and it may be the other way around but check you have the right kind of cable. ;)

aem,

I set the static IPs and such the way you have in your post, and I also disabled the wireless on my 7 machine. Regardless of whether I disable the wireless, the Vista can't ping the 7 (works the other way around). I don't believe I have any firewall problems, but I may have missed something. Any ideas?

In order to share between two windows machines, (not 7 to 7), you will need to follow the rules for windows networking

  • Both systems need to be in the same workgroup
  • At least one share need to be created
  • Although it is not actually essential it is easier if you have the same user name (with a password) on each machine
  • Sharing and NTFS permissions on the shared files need to be appropriate
  • Also file and printer sharing and network discovery need to be enables on both machines

I can share files between the two machines through the wireless, but this is really slow. I don't actually know why it is that I can ping from 7 to Vista but not the other way around, since it worked both ways a few days ago (I don't remember what settings I changed in 7 to stop this :(). I could remote desktop into the 7 machine, and do everything except use the cat5e for file transfers. Still slaving away...
