On bootup on my Win 7 64-bit desktop nothing appeared on the monitor , just a completely black screen .

I realise this could be due to several causes - monitor failure , video card problems etc and I have yet to check these out but my reason for posting here before I do these basic checks is that this problem is accompanied by an unusual response to the Power button which did not exist before as far as I am aware.

When I got this black screen I pressed the power button to switch the PC off . normally this requires you to hold this button down for about 5-10 secs . This time when I did this the PC started to power up again and , to prevent this , I now have to hold this button down for , at least 30 secs or so , before the PC stays off.
Could this power button anomaly be related to this black screen ? .

Hi there
First - Did you see the Bios screen before Windows boots up.

To get the Bios usually hit something like Del or F8 (depends on your computer).

If you don't see the BIOS then you are in trouble but at least lets's start from this point.

If you DON'T see the BIOS is the computer switched on -- you should be able to hear the fan / disks etc on a desktop.

Can't proceed with any more diagnostics until you supply this information.

( I assume you've obviously checked the ultimate obvious stuff 1) cable still attached between computer and monitor, and 2 Monitor is switched on and working).

Even if the monitor is NOT plugged in to the computer you should always be able to tell if its working since you can press the setup / menu buttons on it -- and if it's a TV -as well even easier just switch to a TV channel.

Cheers
