Old CRT TV Experience Much Smoother Then LCD/CRT PC Monitors. Why?

I have an S-Video cable hooked up from my PC to my old 27' Sony WEGA when I feel like being to lazy to sit to play my games and flop on the couch. My question is why do all my games look so much smoother on my old crappy TV with 1024x768 resolution then on my 22' CRT or 24' LCD PC monitors? I have messed with settings backwards and forwards and cannot seem to replicate the experience from my TV onto either of my monitors, and before you say it it is NOT a low FPS issue. Running a game at 30fps on the TV looks better then 80 on the monitors, why is this?

I seem to be missing something here.

I should also mention that I can replicate this with two different computers with vastly different configurations.

It is because the CRT phosphors have "persistence" when illuminated and can not go from emitting light to dark instantly... a bit like a filament bulb vs an LED. That effect takes much of the hard pixilation effect out of the viewing experience.

I have 2 monitors and 1 TV I use. One Monitor is CRT one is LCD and my TV is CRT.

My issue is that the TV has a more fluid motion, things look a lot smoother and better even then my CRT monitor. Obviously the image is not as clear as the other two and yes is does look better at low resolution when compared to low res on the monitors but that's not what I am wondering about. I am asking as to why the TV looks better then my PC monitors when playing games even if on the TV the frame fates are lower then on the PC monitors they still look better on the TV.

And the TV is not a fixed resolution, I can run it at 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768.

Also it is not the video card. I get the same results from my laptop as I do on my PC (Both have S Video ports).

I wish you could see it in person to sow you what I mean. Its like watching a game play video at 30fps compared to 60fps you would expect the 60fps to look better but the 30fs looks better on the CRT TV then the 60fps looks on the CRT monitor let alone the LCD.

Maybe the answer is anything above 60fps your eyes can't keep up and 30 fps looks smoother because your of your depth perception just speculating of course :cool:

companies dont sell $700 1080p monitors just because were stupid with our money..

theres loads of factors that go into an lcd monitor that determins if its good for gaming or not.

the response time is the biggest killer. have a tv with a slow enough response time and some people can see the transition of movement, making it appear less smooth. get a monitor with a 1ms response time and all that goes out the window.

also lcd monitors will be more susceptible to screen tearing when v-sync is applied.

if you only paid say $100 for your lcd display dont expect it to be brilliant, that after all is a very budget price.
people who spent $$$$ on a gaming pc then skimp on a decent monitor arent doing themselves any favours.

Maybe your TV is just a better CRT than your actually CRT monitor and thats why it looks better.

In the Days of CRT displays facts and figures other than the size werent really released as they were all seen as "the same"

The differences between your CRT monitor and CRT TV is probably due to hertz (refresh rate), resolution, and drivers for the CRT monitor. What hertz is the CRT running at? What hertz is the TV running at?

Can you run the same refresh rate and resolution on both and compare from there? Also understand refresh rates worked differently on CRT's than do LCD's.

As to the overall question... it could simply be your TV is better at displaying smoother images than your CRT monitor.

Hmm I never thought about the refresh rate, however I cannot play games on the TV for more then an hour without getting a headache, I have the issue with some CRTs and certain refresh rates on them, I'll have to compare them, thanks for the idea. I'll get back to you.
