Solved One laptop cannot connect to internet when other laptop is turned off.

Hi, I recently changed my wireless security type from 'No Authentication (open)' to 'WPA-Personal' Encryption type 'TKIP'.

I did this after becoming concerned about other people outside of my home possibly being able to use my wireless connection and reading up about how to change it.

There are two laptops in the home, and I have changed the security settings for both to WPA-Personal(is it better if it is WPA2 or is WPA-Personal good enough??).


The problem I now have is that when the first laptop is switched off, my own laptop loses connection to the internet.

I did a bit of reading and tried a suggestion to fix my IP address?(one of the messages I get is 'invalid IP address'). I did this and it hasn't worked. I am assuming that I am now connecting to the router through the first laptop, but I do not know how to change this.

I would like to have both laptops able to connect to the internet independently of each other.

I tried that and now both laptops cannot connect. I went into my belkin router and changed to WPA-2 from the second laptop. Now neither has connection and they are both powered on.

What can I do now to fix this?


When I click on SSID I get the following message on both laptops

'The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network'

Does this mean i will have to reinstall the router and then reconnect both laptops?

I am sorry. refreshing the router is probably the best option. What make is the router ?

No no it is ok. I connected the laptops to the router with the cable and set all settings to WPA. I am now back online and everything's working again!

Tomorrow I will put my security to WPA-2 however tonight I shall leave it alone so I approach things with a fresh head!

I am glad to hear that. WPA-2 is safer than what you have now.

You also need to change the security configuration on your laptop's networks.
Open Network and Sharing, click on "Manage Wireless Networks", find your connection from the list, right click > Properties, and on the Security tab change to WPA2-Personal.

Hi, I've changed over to WPA-2, with AES encryption. Both laptops now are working again TY so much for your help.

I feel so much better now it's sorted.
