Dear SF Users

Recently my pc fried , motherboard went , white smoke etc lol

So ive been looking at building a new PC , below is the build list i was thinking of (Z97/DDR3) :

Intel Core i7-4790K, MSI GeForce GTX 980, Corsair 750D - System Build - PCPartPicker United Kingdom

I have also been looking at X99/DDR4 setups but its a few hundred pounds more expensive but more up-to-date tech

Any opinions on my build list / part change suggestions or views on going with X99/DDR4 instead are greatly appreciated as im struggling to make the decision on what to go with

Kind Regards

Alan

Looks like a nice solid build. Do you already have a Solid State drive? If not I would add a 250/256GB one for the OS, you don't need to spend much more than £80 on one but it will make the whole PC much faster.

If it's mainly a gaming rig? then I would not bother with the X99 setup. Although it would be nice, the cost of DDR4 ram is just plain crazy at the moment and enough to put me off.

I currently have a 120GB EVO and yeah X99/DDR4 is nice as i would get the 5930k if i got a X99/DDR4 build, the X99 build i was looking at costs almost £1800

PC would be used for a mix of gaming and Virtual Machine testing

I would stick with the Z97 build then. I don't think the extra cores would come in useful for either of those uses. Although if I had the money X99 would be awesome but don't talk to me about that, I used to be a serial upgrader and spent far too much money on my rig at the time lol.

Alan, Do you maybe have plans to Sli a 2nd 980 if so then 750w PSU is undersized. I'm of the belief that with PSU's more is better. The 750 will work great with one 980 but consider 1000+ if you might want to go with a 2nd 980. Nice build have fun and it should freak'n crush games !

What you pay there I have no knowledge.
What ebay has I really don't care. I would never use them.

What you are going to pay for your selection of cpu, motherboard and gpu a few dollars more for the most important hardware in the computer doesn't seem all that bad.
Your choice.

I don't have a problem with your original selection. I know very little about Corsair Rm power supplies. I know Corsair AX power supplies reputation.
I just posted another choice that I think would be a little better considering that other hardware you have chosen.

Please think of the PSU as the very heart of your build. Quality and capacity spent now will pay dividends of untold value over many many years. I hope you photo chronicle your build and post pictures in our "Show Us Your Rig" section.
