I've given in and bought a new Dell - now not knowing much about new - went for Dell as had it before and price was good. Got it for $703 - was asking $1099 with 20% $879 and then a farther discount at check out of 20%.

Its an Dell Inspiron Desktop 3671 9th Gen i5-9400 8GB 1TB NVIDIA GT 730 Win 10 Home
20% off* with code PDELLSAVE. T&Cs apply.

Hopefully that is OK system and not discounted because its a patsy! I am "a casual user" according to internet sales.
Not being delivered til 7th Feb - 10th Feb - tell me if its a lemon so can change it for another etc.

There are many configurations of the 3671. Your exact spec might only be available in Australasia.

Considering the UK price of GBP £630 for P/N: I3671-5220BLK with the following:
UPC: 884116361220
SKU: I36715220BLKM
Brand: Dell Consumer
MPN: I3671-5220BLK
Product Type: Desktop Computer
Processor Model: i5-9400
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Core i5
Operating System: Windows 10 Home
Standard Memory: 12GB
Total Hard Drive Capacity: 1TB
Graphics Controller Model: UHD Graphics 630
Color: Black with Silver Trim
Optical Drive Type: DVD-Writer
Bluetooth: Yes

It seems you did quite well pricewise.

Can't comment on anything else because I don't have one of those machines.

In the commercial world, where computers are used in place of the old Cash Register in small businesses, Dell has the greater market share. I'm told that those machines are of better quality than those sold to the general public (home users).
But in the Super stores, either IBM or NCR are the primary players.

But my own experience as a Computer tech. rates Dell at the very bottom of the heap.

I've had direct contact with Dell over PC's that have failed and they would only give excuses like, "that PC had a bad motherboard" or "that PC had a bad CPU chip". They made no effort to replace either PC.

So in both cases, I wound up building a new PC for that customer.
It seemed like Dell would build PC's with second grade parts and just hope they would last till the warranty expired.

I have nine computers, and none of them are from Dell. If someone gave me one, it would go right to Electronic Reclamation.

Good luck to you mate,

TechnoMage

I, as with SIW2, cannot comment on the particular model you are awaiting delivery of, however my personal experience with Dell in supply and setup for hundreds of units including Servers Workstations and general Office use systems has been generally good. There were issues with early models (late 80's and early 90's), where as with some others they went the route of manufacturing their own cases and case styles which meant that they required bespoke components EG power supplies and even motherboards, when they did fail, but this was rare and their worldwide network of offices meant that my end users were served well.

The have more recently standardized, as have others, to use standard cases and thus the old issues no longer apply, and I would have no issues recommending them for home or business use. Obviously check warranties and check in your greater area as to reviews of the particular model but you should be OK.

I know that locally here in the UK as the PC is being ordered online, it would be covered by distance selling regulations which would give the buyer rights to return the unit if it was not as advertised, Check your local laws for your rights

Dell computers are ok. I have 10 pc's and 3 of them are dell, but I find the MoBo's on them go fast, so I would say Ibm or one of those commercial computers would be better. otherwise that one is good (I never buy computers new because i'm cheap but enjoy your self!)

Unfortunately it doesn't have a SSD.
You should buy a Small SSD to have Windows and programs on it and use the HDD for data only.
A 120G SSD (120G) will cost less than US$25 and a 256G less than US$35. Crucial-BX500
A SSD is about 5x faster than a HDD so the computer will boot in less than 20 sec and open programs at a blink of an eye.

I honestly hope their quality has improved over the years. I have an Optiplex 745 on hand to use Windows XP for games that dislike 7 for whatever reason(especially 16-bit programs that will not run on a 64-bit OS). The Dell mouse it came with is a bit poor- it will sometimes momentarily lose connection and the pointer will jump to the corner. And despite being released in 2007 the onboard graphics chip can't even run Morrowind(a 2002 game) without graphical glitches. It's also a "desktop" case so I find trying to locate compatible parts for it harder than it should be just because they went small.

It's not given me a great impression of the brand if you have to put in basic upgrades just to get it on spec for the year it was released.

OK guys I think have been had!
Maybe my fault as I checked the slots for number and kind of BSB's and that there was a DVD - but never noticed that DVD is optional. When I went to E Bay to see if I was completely nuts - and went to History of purchases - it said that the computer details had been updated by the seller after purchase. I wonder if today. Dell is the seller. On the back of the computer it shows the BSB slots and DVD draw as no 5 - what I didn't notice was it saying it was optional. I would have asked how much etc. But it is there now anyway so may have missed it - will they use that to refuse to refund is what I am now wondering.
The man in Malaysia told me that these DVD's haven't been in use for a long time but as I told him -I didn't know as haven't bought a new computer for years. And that I hadn't bought anything like a printer which came with disc etc and hadn't heard of a new way of putting stuff re printers etc on a computer.
Being on age pension I cant afford to lose so much money. Glad I hadn't got too far too in putting stuff on. But still I cant help feeling this is not good.

They are becoming less used since the increase in average size of software install packages. My latest case does not even have any externally accessible slots.
My case has a couple of USB sockets at the front and more at the back plus I've fitted a PCI USB Card with 5 sockets

I rarely find that I have a need for DVD or CD access except, for ripping older installers.

and if I do I picked up a dual layer USB3 blue ray writer for around £60 that will cover my needs for clients who still rely on the technology

If you are using a mouse from the 2000's then it might be time to get a new one! and these days companies stuff gets crappier and crappier as they try to squeeze the most money out of you by making junk so that when that junk expires you buy new junk.

Yes - but having gone and taken off all info of mine - guess what - the computer came up with it had found Epson Printer!
Now if only the bloke in Malaysia spoke English as a first language this would never have had to occur. Because I told all of them on way and was put through to "engineer" who could solve my problem which was how to open the DVD etc.

Thanks for replies. my mouse is MS 3000 and so is keyboard. Hope that means OK - let me know if not.
And Barman I will buy that gadget so I have more USB's, only got 2 blue ones on front and 4 black ones at back. And I use one for mouse activate and one for ext. HD

And I did think it would have a DVD player in the slot - ha ha shows how old fashioned I am eh!

Now I am once again starting out but have started from Thunderbird this time and then Google as Edge was here and used it - seems OK so will keep it as backup. Google probably spies as much as Edge anyway...……….

BTW breaking news 40 more got the virus on that ship - so guys don't forget to take Vitamin C daily. Better safe than sorry.
