paragon and system reserved

I have installed Paragon backup & recovery 10.1. Paragon asks for more options for selecting partitions than Windows system imaging and I need advice on what partitions to select. I have:
17.5 GB - PQ Service (hidden partition)
100 MB - System reserved
457 GB - C: (Operating system & applications)
457 GB - D:
I don't want the image to include D: so have been selecting the 100MB system reserved and C:.
What would Windows be imaging?
Should I be including the 100 MB system reserved? and does Windows imaging include this bit as well?

Appreciate any comments.

Paragon is not my backup of choice, but I'm sure that it is okay, just that I'm not as familiar with it. If it were me, I would backup any critical partition, i.e. PQ service, System reserved and C:, but I would do them separately, so that I could pick and choose among them later. Actually, I would do the same with D:...depending on it's content.

MJF Just back up the OS and any drive with personal documents. Make sure that you have a compatible boot DVD.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if he is upgrading from Vista OEM to W7 OEM, is it not possible that the system reserved partition contains data that might be necessary to reinstall Vista, before reinstalling W7?

Not the 100MB partition. The recovery partition is separate.

Hiya,

The point is you can choose which partitions to back up, where to store the backup images, and where to restore them to.

You don't get those options with Windows backup.

If you have the storage space , you can back up the whole lot once. If there is a major disaster - restore the whole thing to a new HD.

After that ( or if you don't have the space) just backup the 100mb "system" partition and "boot" partition ( the windows 7 partition ).

You can either then set up differentials of the Windows 7 partition at regular intervals, or just make a complete new Windows 7 partition backup when you feel there have been major changes.

If you prefer, you can Make the Windows 7 partition both the "boot" and the "system" partition, as has been suggested - then you don't need the 100mb at all.

That makes the backup and restore process simpler.

Short of a hardware failure - you are most likely to just want to restore the Windows 7 partition.

You can do that without damaging any of the other data on the drive.
