PC turns on itself and the monitor does not show anything.

Hi!Bit of a problem
I decided to put my 3 yr. old PC into use again, its been standing in the corner for 2 years now.
So the problem.
When i plug the power cable in, the PC turns itself on, it doesn't need me to press the power button, secondly, when its on, the monitor doesn't do anything it looks as if its shut down and nothing comes up.

Any ideas?

Risky mate are you sure the monitor actually switches on - obvious and not trying to be funny but have done it myself in the past. Plus / or try another monitor if possible. The machine switch itself on stuff may be just due to crud build up inside.

Being careful have a look inside and do a clean out and unplug and reseat all the plugs, cards, RAM sticks etc etc but make sure you ground yourself first and during this operation.

Turn the PSU off on the PC before plugging the mains cable in, then turn it back on and see if it starts up on its own. Does the motherboard beep when it turns on?

Yep as Boozad says mate if need be you might have to test the PSU. As a matter of intersy how old is it??

My other thought now is that the power on switch is stuck down perhaps. Now with the power unplugged try pushing it on and off a few times and see if it "clicks" those small switches usually have an impregnated rubber base contacts and just could be sticky from lack of use and / or air humidity.

1. there is no graphics card, to plug the monitor in, you'd have to plug it in to the motherboard input.

i always do that, i turn the PSU off then plug the cable in and then turn it back on again.And no, it doesn't do a beeping sound.
And you know when you hold down the power button for some seconds it turns off the computer instantly?Well, it doesnt do that, a fan stops working and that's it, you'd have to power off the PSU unit manually in order to turn it off.

one last thing about the computer, its 3 -4 years old and bought by elderly people, it was used for around a year(max), and during that time, it was turned on for 2 - 3 times a week for 2 hours.It was running Vista when we got it and its been sitting in the corner for 2-3 years.

Actually Boozad if that is the case I would be suspecting the RAM and doing a memtest.
