Hi all,

Would be great to get some help on this.

Windows 7 (and all the other versions, for that matter) permissions has always been a bit of a dark art in my experience.

That aside, today I tried to save a snip to my Documents folder (which actually resides in my D:\Media folder) and I got a permission denied error. I have been saving to this folder for years without issue, and have not changed any settings myself whatsoever.

I can still save the snip to my desktop, and when I try and move it to Documents I get "You'll need to provide administrator permission..." message - click continue and it allows ok. But obviously that means I cannot save my snips straight to that folder as I've always done.

Going to permissions settings for the folder and 3 unknown entries exist called "Account Unknown(S-1-5-21-1224..[long GUID type number]) for which I cannot edit because it says the permissions are inherited.

Any ideas from any permissions gurus please? I don't want to reinstall Windows at this stage really.

Many thanks - any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Welcome to the forum. The long number is the SID I'd of a user not on the system has it been used with another user at some point? It's seems to be getting permission from a folder above. You need to take ownership of the folders. The problem can just be you have the uac set to high so it's asking for admin permission

Dear samuria,

Many thanks for your reply!

Turning UAC off it like the first thing I do after installing Windows..!

I've actually sorted this. I went to the parent folder, where it listed the same users. It let me delete them from there, and those credentials were also removed from the one I was having issues with because they were inherited. At the same time I added myself (my user name at log on) with full control, although I'm already a member of the administrators group so ~should~ have already have permission.

Anyway, after all that, and a reboot, I can now again save snips to the folder, etc, etc, without prompts and so on.

Just strange why it started happening on it's own.. I've not installed any new software, updated recently - really nothing on the system at all - so very strange this one..!

If anyone has any clues would be more than welcome to hear them.

Thanks again for your response - maybe I should have done a bit more fiddling before posting. Story of the internet?? :D

All the best.
