Everytime I either play back a video or watch streaming on my Acer Extensa 5235 it stops and make a high pitched noise and either carries on or just freezes my laptop. So is this a Windows 7 thing or down to my laptop which is running Windows 7 Pro??

More than likely a driver or codec problem. (so software based, if driver it's more on the manufacturer of the system than windows)
Does the problem occur when using this player?
VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

Sorry to ask you to download something to troubleshoot but that player doesn't use windows system codecs so it's actually part of the troubleshooting here.
