I have installed Windows 7 on my hard drive, Y, and I have XP Home installed on C. Right now, I have to use a boot disk to get to XP, and if I don't have the disc, it says, NT LDR is missing.

My question is, how do I set these two up to dual boot, with XP being the primary?

Will I see any significant difference in performance if I run W7 from an IDE hard drive, instead of a SATA hard drive?

Hi Tiswell,

What I would suggest is that you download, install and run EasyBCD in windows 7 and use that to control your dual boot.

Full instructions for using the program and setting default OS etc are either in the program or on the website.

Download EasyBCD 1.7.2 - NeoSmart Technologies

Alright, thanks. The only problem with that is, I can't access Windows 7. If I set my boot priority to the Y drive, it simply says NTLDR is missing. If I use the boot disk AND set it to Y, it just hangs at a black screen after it posts.

Do you have a DVD for windows 7 - if so boot from it go into repair options - startup repair - that will get you into Windows 7

From there you can get XP running :D

I think I might, if I don't I can surely burn it. Thanks!

I'll come back in a few minutes to post my success, hopefully.

Alright, so I have Windows 7 installed and I have downloaded and installed EasyBCD.

I've tried to add Windows XP to the boot list, and I have done so succesfully, however XP does not boot.

I used BCD to add XP to the Boot manager when I start up, but selecting XP doesn't boot to XP, it just says NT LDR is missing.

Help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Boot into 7 and have a look on the Win7 and XP partitions . Locate the XP boot files if they are there.

The ones in the bottom of this pic are what you are looking for:

instalation stops
I try to install win 7 in dual boot with preinstaling win xp home sp3. I have tried with two version, build 7000 and 7048. Allways happens the same, installation works well until restarting at point of cca. 27 % expanding files. After restarting, desktop shows : STARTING WINDOWS and stop.
Any advice ?
Thanks in advance.

I had this happen to me. When I installed Windows 7 on another partition on my XP machine, I could not boot to XP anymore. There are other options (like that XPbootfiles.zip) but I ended up doing a new install of XP. Now they both work with the 7 boot manager.
