John's right that we need to more thoroughly check for spyware which can be as pernicious as malware. So in addition to the full SAS scan he prescribed, check each of your browsers Options for Add-Ons to disable all but FlashPlayer. Update Flash if you're ever prompted - check now if it's up to date.

Check brower Search that only Google is allowed in the stable search box which doesn't allow spying unless it's Chrome which is itself spyware. Tick the box to disallow anything from changing Google.

SAS goes even deeper to root any spying intruders out of registry where they sometimes continue to run if only uninstalled. But I'd tame it a bit by in it's Preference turning it off at Startup and disallowing updating except manually when you run it as a stand-alone scanner.

Just something to add, I've noticed now that when saving files on photoshop the folder icons aren't appearing but I can still save things. When uploading things to YouTube I go to find the file to upload and I have to fidget around with it a bit before if will work and even then the folder icons don't show up. Does this mean it's a problem with Windows Explorer?

See if you can restore the Folder Icon on the Properties tab of one of them.

What did SAS scan find?

Check your browsers' Tools>Add-ons that only Flash player is allowed, search is set to google only with others prohibited.

I wasn't saying that the folder icons not showing was that big of a problem for me. I was wondering if that could show if it was a problem that could be fixed by doing something like reinstalling Windows Explorer... if that's even possible...

To reinstall Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Windows Internet Explorer) you would have to reinstall the Operating System. A DSKCHK then SFC scan may straighten this out.

Did you run the SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) and ADWcleaner, any results?

Check the Folder Properties like Greg suggested. Look at the bottom of the General tab if it says "Hidden" uncheck that and OK, Apply your way out.

Did a DSKCHK then SFC Scan. Problem still there.

Ran SAS. Found like 600 cookies and deleted them, problem still there.

Any other suggestions?

OK, I'm reaching, but a very simple test.

Open any folder> Click on Organize in the menu upper left> Folder and search options> View tab> Check Always show icons, never thumbnails> Apply and OK your way out

Try it now and see if any change. If not, just go back and uncheck that setting.

I'm fairly sure it is a problem with Windows Explorer as it happens when trying to save a project file in Sony Vegas and when trying to open a photoshop document in Photoshop. (The Photoshop thing only makes it crash if I open a file from within Photoshop, if I go to Explorer and double-click the file it works fine.) Could reinstalling my OS fix the problem?

If you have the original Dell factory preinstall it's an inferior install which most tech enthusiasts will not run. I'd definitely Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 sticking closely with the tools and methods which assure a perfect install.

To get it cleanest first run the Dell Diagnostics Utility - How to Run the from boot to test hardware, see if it will boot and run. If so then I'd only keep the OEM Tools partition since Recovery won't run after a clean install anyway. Delete all other partitions during booted install, create new as you wish or just highlight the Unallocated Space and click Next to begin install.

When I backup my files before doing this do I need to backup everything or just what's in the user folder? Just a little worried about losing things since I've never re-installed an OS before.

Everything that needs to be remembered for backup is compiled in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

The best way to organize your files to back up is to sort everything into the User folders and drag them to an external HD, another HD, or other storage. This is explained in detail in the tutorial.

Just as Greg says mate you only need that personal data docs pics etc save all that and do the clean install Greg quoted it is brilliant and you will not get all that crapware that one gets with prebuilts. Believe me you will see such a difference I did with both my Toshiba's and boy do they come with some crapware.

Used it on one and an OEM on the other but that was my choice at the time before I knew of he tutorial

Yes, you should delete all partitions during the booted install to get it cleanest. This will wipe out everything.

The first steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 deal with making sure you back up everything so you won't lose anything.
