What kind of license is your Win 7 Ultimate (Retail or OEM)?
Retail license can be transferred to another computer.
OEM license, once installed on a computer cant be transferred to another computer.

On my laptop, it is a retail license of Ultimate that I bought.

My PC came with it installed, so I guess that is OEM, is that right? Also, that one is Professional, not Ultimate.

It would be cool to transfer the Ultimate one to the PC and keep it on laptop, but I am guessing this would not be possible.

Win 10 only have two types: Home and Pro

You don't need to buy a Win 10 license to install on you Win 7 laptop or desktop.

- Backup your data on an external disk.
- Download the Win 10 iso (it has the Home and Pro in same disk). Extract it to a folder using 7-Zip
- Run setup. Choose the Pro version. As you launched setup from win 7 you wont be asked for a key code.
- If you wish to do a fresh install, use the win 7 key code.

My suggestion is to try it fist. Use your desktop and do a win 10 fresh install on a clean disk.
- Detach all other HDD or SSD leaving on only the target disk
- Boot from a Win 10 installation disk.
- Choose win 10 pro
- Delete all partitions and proceed
- When asked for the key code, skip.

You will have 30 days to try. If you want to use it, insert your Win 7 key code. It will activate.

Hi Megahertz07,

Thanks for this. The more I think about it, the more I want to switch to Windows 10.

I read somewhere that the free upgrade has expired, but if the steps you mention still work - that will be great!

One thing is, it took me a while to get 7 setup the way I wanted, as I am no expert on this stuff. I think it was mainly people on here that helped so I will have to backtrack through all of that. Like I remember I wanted the OS on my SSD, then to have all data etc. on the separate 4TB drive. My Documents, Pictures, Videos and them folders got sent to live on the bigger drive with the instructions I had followed. Which is what I will want to do again on Windows 10.

Is this all still possible in Windows 10?

Wow, I just found a thread from 2015 with some guys on here trying to help me get my PC sorted out.

Namely gregrocker and GokAy were the two forum members who helped out. My God, I didn't realize the thread was this big! 27 pages! First it was about my laptop, then about my PC. The two lads were excellent help.

Windows Startup Repair query

Hoping I don't have as much queries/hassle when I make the switch to 10.

Most people on this Forum had tried Win 10 and didn't like it. Even M$ is trying to kill Win 7 with the free upgrade, Win 7 still has
36% of the share x 51% of win 10.

My suggestion is to try it fist. Use your desktop and do a win 10 fresh install on a clean disk.

Yes you can install Win 10 on the SSD and use the HDD for data. Same way you do on Win 7.
You can use Kari tutorial to move C:\users to D:\Users

Hi,

About trying it, I think I am just going to go for it. And then if I don't like it, I will just have to like it anyway as everywhere is going to have to move to it at some stage anyway. We will be moving to it in work in about a year I think.

At the end of M$ win 7 support, nothing will change. Win 7 will work the way it works today.

Hi again,

Just some update from me:

1. I tried to install Windows 10 only to be given the message "Setup has failed to validate the product key" (This is a fully legit version of Windows 7 Professional by the way)

Probably even more bizarre:

2. Mysteriously my PC is acting 'normal' now this morning. I can open up programs without any delays like before. Only yesterday, I had to wait almost 15 mins for the PC to come to life before I could open any program.

You gotta love technology. It never ceases to surprise me.

:)
