That's the problem I had on my new Asus K60IJ computer. As I make my so-called living as a freelance writer/editor, I NEED OpenOffice, Adobe PDF and Quicken. But they came up "soft and fuzzy" on all text.
I nearly went crazy - nobody could solve it, and I was ready to take the computer back. SIGH.
Then a nice chap Online sent me some links - and I "accidentally" solved the problem! IF YOU'VE GOT THE SAME PROBLEM - - - -try this. Worked for me!

R-click on COMPUTER.
L-click on PROPERTIES
L-click on Advanced System Settings
L-click on Advanced menu
L-click on SETTINGS in the PERFORMANCE box.

Clear ALL boxes except for the following:
Smooth edges of screen fonts.
Smooth-scroll list boxes.
Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

CLICK ON "APPLY" THEN "OK" and get out of all frames.
Re-boot if you like, but you don't have to.

If you wish, leave the shadows under the mouse - but BE SURE
that the box "Enable desktop composition" is UN-CHECKED.

When I did that, all my programs appeared nice and sharp, as if by magic!

Probably saved my marriage - - -and sanity.

I encountered the same problem and checked the above opptions (the ones in performance potions/visual effects tab) one by one. Just turnninf off the "Enable desktop decommposition" solves the problem
