OK today I got a random re-activation message on my Win7 Pro. The only thing that has changed was that I updated my video card driver yesterday. They actually said that might be the cause.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Activation is much more closely tied to hardware now than it was in the past, but that shouldn't cause a big problem, unless you have an OEM version of W7.

Even still, with an OEM, if it fails to re-activate and you have to call, a driver update is most definitely an acceptable reason. They will simply reactivate over the phone, and you'll be done.

It really seems that a simple driver update should not be "enough" to trigger the need for reactivation. Even if it did, it doesn't seem like you would have to pick up the phone and call...even for an OEM...it should just reactivate from the machine itself.

Are you sure that the new graphics drivers are the only thing that has changed since Win7 was activated?

The changes that trigger the need to re-activate Windows are cumulative.

(I don't recall ever triggering re-activation with graphics drivers. Hard disk controller drivers, yes.)

I added a USB hard drive 3 weeks ago and since then, I installed the Nvidia driver update last night. The activation notice didn't pop up until now so today I had to call and they activated it with no issue, I just think driver updates should not trigger a re-activation if indeed thats what it was.
