Re-Installing Win7 / Process hangs in a black screen with cursor

Hi all,

I have been trying multiple times to install Windows 7 to my hp pavilion g6-1007 laptop from an installation DVD but with no success so far. The problem is that I can't proceed with the installation. Every time I put the DVD and boot from there, first I see that black screen with the bar at the bottom saying "loading files". And after it finishes, it gets to a black screen (with only a cursor present) and then it does nothing more than that. It hangs there, no matter how much time I wait. The DVD-ROM also throttles down and the HDD activity LED stops blinking at all.

I thought about a crappy image, so I downloaded the repair disk iso and burned a CD with it, but then I got exactly the same behavior. I'm thinking now of perhaps trying to install from a USB stick, as a last resort.

I know that there are some similar posts in the forum about this situation, but I wasn't able to figure out what finally the solution to this problem might be.

Could someone advise me on that?

Are you running any virtual drives, or DVD decryptors? If you are, disable them and try again.

I have found those to mess with booting from discs. I remember AnyDVD in particular giving me some dramas.

Obviously you've set the boot order in your bios?

It's always good to have an OS flash drive in your laptop bag anyways.

What exactly do you mean? When I'm booting from the DVD, there is obviously no OS running, right? So, I don't get your question! :huh:

Yes, otherwise I wouldn't be able to go to this point. The problem is later.

I don't know the technicalities of a virtual disk drive, or AnyDVD, but they are drivers and although the OS was not running in my case, it would not boot from a disk. Don't ask me how or why, it just refused to boot.

You deleting the recovery partition shouldn't be a cause of what you're experiencing.

Are you able to boot into this system at all?

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt.You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

I have attempted to follow the instructions above however I can not get past the first command. Just a flashing cursor that doesn't allow me to type anything

See if you can boot and get Diskpart to respond in another PC, without running any farther than LIST DISK. Seriously, if you type CLEAN it will wipe the PC's hard drive!

If it will respond on another PC then you have a bad installer. Did you change it per the recommendation?

Hello. Ok I must be really dumb. I am thinking that I access BIOS by hitting F2 as soon as computer begins to power on. Which takes me to a screen that has tabs Information, configuration, security, boot and exit. After looking through those tabs I do not see anything reading UEFI, Legacy BIOS, or CSM. Am I in the wrong place? I have the option of hitting F2 for setup and F12 for boot devices.

Also I did place the Windows 7 DVD into my daughters laptop which she has windows 8 on and the installer popped up and asked to check compatability or install. I was afraid to do anything the last thing I need is another laptop not operating.

Do you think I could of messed something up when I created that bcd_back up? I just don't understand how one day my laptop was working and 4 hours later it is inoperable after Microsoft updates.

One other thing.... Don't know if this means anything but with the Windows 7 DVD out of laptop after a few minutes of the black screen laptop goes to the same background that you see in the background of the first windows of the install where you select language and that. It's blue with a little branch and white bird along with arrow cursur. But that is it nothing else looks just like a screensaver or something. I know it isn't but that is what it looks like.

Then you probably don't have a UEFI BIOS.

It sounds like you are not booting the disk but instead running it at least on your daughter's PC. How to Boot A Computer from CD or DVD - YouTube
