Solved really odd problem, have internet, but no browser

i can ping yahoo via cmd, i can ping google via cmd, i can tracert both in the cmd window.

skype works, but browsing does not, FF, IE neither work. i've flushed dns, attempted to reset ip address, reset modem, wireless router, etc, 3 of 4 machines work, one does not. and its the new one

toshiba 755 laptop.

pc says i have internet connection but cant browse anywhere, skype does work.

any help appreciated before 2000 CDT

Have you tried connecting via Ethernet?? That might just help me understand a little better.

yup with the same results, like i said, all indications are that i have internet on that machine, but the browser will not connect. either via wireless or direct connect to modem. i have three laptops on the table, two work, this one does not and it just started doing this, it was working fine this morning, and just flat stopped.

Use another computer to transfer chrome or similar to your troublesome PC, and see what happens..

installed flock, get same reponse "cannot establish connection" but if i go to cmd window and type ping mail.yahoo.com or any other site, i get response. skype works (no dns) but dns seems to be ok, restarted winsock, no love.

cannot release says something about media not attached.

Such strange behaviour. I have never had anyone bring me a PC with a problem quite like this, it's very unique.

That may suggest a problem with your firewall, or antivirus being 'overprotective'

firewall is off completly, antivirus is avast and i'm checkin into that, was working fine this morning

avast needed to be updated, apparently it was the cause of the issue. i updated it and now it works fine.

thanks for the help from the backside of the pond.
