Removing Registry entries confusion (couldn't think of a better title)

If I dig into the registry & remove anentry from the startup folder there,will this remove the entire program from my pc or just remove the entry from sys configs startup folder ??? Wasn't sure which part of the forum for this post.So,please forgive if this is posted in the wrong section.I'm trying to remove something (task manager) that I placed in the startup folder earlier today.But,I want to do it properly.I found some instructions for how to do so from the windows registry BUT...I need to know if I were to do this this way,if the program would still be available to me on my pc where I used to access it from. I don't want to remove the program from my pc (which is what I'm afraid of while doing this from the registry). All I want to do is stop this program from starting up when windows starts up and remove the entry in sys.configs startup folder. So,if I dig into the registry & remove this entry from the startup folder there,will this remove the entire program from my pc or just remove the entry from sys configs startup folder ??? Thanks for any help.

The program will still be there, but can you show us which Registry key you're looking at? Right-click the key (the keys are in the left-hand pane) and choose "Copy Key Name" and then paste it here.

Do you have anything in there right now?

Also, what do you mean by "sys.configs startup folder" (or "sys configs startup folder")?

Finally: when you say you put something in the Startup folder, do you mean the one in the Start Menu? I mean if so, then all you would have to do is just delete it out of that folder.

Okay...All that's in there right now is "Task Manager" that I placed in there earlier today (I wanted task mgr to load at boot). And,now I have decided that I wish to remove it (have decided that I don't want the task manager loading at boot). Since all of this took place today, if you made a system restore point before adding Task Manager to the startup folder, you can roll back your machine to that restore point.

Mars,thanks for your reply.I appreciate you trying to help.BUT...using system restore for this seems a bit of overzealous.Plus....I'm TRYING to learn (at least a little) about how things sometimes work in the windows registry.

Just delete it out of that folder. This does not require you to mess with System Configuration (a.k.a. "msconfig") or the Registry. Simply open that Startup folder that you found as per these instructions and delete the shortcut to Task Manager that you put in there. It's just a shortcut and so therefore it's just a link pointing to the actual program and therefore Task Manager will not be deleted - only this shortcut that you created will be deleted.
