My Windows 7 computer is agonizingly slow at startup generating many errors and then culminates with service startup failures because the system "did not respond... in a timely fashion".

What might be causing this?

The system is up-to-date; anti-virus software reports no issues; hardware tests OK.

Could be system corruption causing it. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html; run it up to three times to fix all issues. I'll see if I can find some more info in the meantime.

So, I changed the MSCONFIG to eliminate startup applications,

Changed the two services UPnP and SSDP to start automatically (they were set to manual).

I re-installed MSE.

I ran the SFC and found no errors, but I still get the messages in the event log. (see previous post)

Check the dependencies for SSDP to see if another service that depends on it is having problems. To find the dependencies:

1. Click Start Menu
2. Type Services into search programs and files (do not hit enter)
3. Right click Services and click Run as administrator
4. Right click the SSDP Discovery Service
5. click Properties
6. Dependencies tab

Set any and all dependencies to startup type: manual through the General tab in Properties by using the above procedure 1-5 on each dependency and see if you still get ID 7000.

Now, MANUAL seems at odds with AUTO as noted:

However, I have tried both, all being manual and all being automatic.
SSDP Discovery depends on:
- HTTP
UPnP depends on:
- HTTP
- SSDP Discovery (which has dependencies noted above)
Note that the actual name of the service in WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-discovery service. I had panic’d briefly not seeing HTTP under the H’s.
Anyway, all are currently automatic, running and the problem exhibits itself both ways. With manual, they start anyway even though not automatically started on boot. Again, having tried them both ways, they are currently configured to automatic.
