Solved Replacing missing or corrupt file

I have a desktop pc with Win 7 Home Edition 64bit OS. Recently when i started it all i saw was a black screen and it wouldnt boot up after that. I put my Win install disc into the CD drive and restarted the PC and received the message referred to in some other posts on this thread. It advised that i had a file either missing or corrupted ....the file is \CMLDR....then it showed STATUS OxcOOOOOOf ...

Once i placed the install disc in the drive and restarted the pc i ran the Recovery program and after running it the PC started normally. I thought my problem was solved until , after shutting down the pc for the day, I started it up the next day and it again gave me the black screen and failed to boot up. After several additional tries i figured out that for some reason the install disc will enable me to start the pc but DOESNT ACTUALLY REPLACE THE MISSING OR CORRUPT FILE.

i also have a repair disc for this pc which i burned when i first bought it but i havent used it because i also have the OS install disc.

my questions are
1. where can i get my missing or corrupt file so i dont have to keep using the install disc just to start my pc.
2.should i try inserting the repair disc instead of the install disc to possibly get this permanently repaired?
Any other suggestions you have will be welcome. My pc runs fine in all other respects. Thanks very much.

:D

I have tried System Restore several times..no help. I have run the Recovery Console innumerable times and it always fixes the problem and the pc starts normally . Usually ,however, the next day when i start it up i get the same black screen and have to resort to inserting Win 7 install disk and run recovery console to repair it again. I read somewhere on this forum that it sometimes takes running the Recovery console several times before it gets fixed but i am way passed several times. All i need to replace is one file....CMLDR Is my only solution to reinstall Win7...which i really dont want to do.?
Thanks for your help.:p

repair install missing file.

Blue... i looked through the turorial you referred me to ....a little too complicated for me in all likelihood. Would it be correct to assume a reinstall of win 7 is my only alternative to that?Im not a computer tech person although i have had every type of crash over the years and have always finally been able to fix them or just format the hard drive and start over.

It seems it may have to be that way, backup all your data you want to keep, and then perform a clean install. Once you have completed all the Windows Updates and installed all the programs you use regularly, then it would be good idea to create a Image Backup, you will be able to restore from this image in the future if you have any other problems.

Blue....fyi...i used my repair disc instead of my Win install disc and it seems like it may have worked. After booting it up i removed the repair disc and then rebooted it and it actually booted up. I guess i am confused as to why it would do that from the Repair disc and not the install disc. Can you enlighten me?
Thanks very much.:D

I'm not sure then, it may just be the CD/DVD drive being weird, I have some music CD's which won't play properly on my Xbox, but will be play perfectly on a CD player.

BLUE...well i guess it was too good to be true because my pc stopped booting up without resorting to the use of the repair and/or orig install disc.So...last week i made a back up copy of what i needed from my desktop and did a clean install using my original win 7 home premium install disc. The install went smoothly so i figured it would include the missing file i have been unsuccessfully trying to replace since a longgggggg time ago.Since i completed the install and lost all of my programs etc i have only reinstalled a very few of them just wanting to concentrate on making sure my prior lost/corrupt file problem was solved.
Much to my surprise my desktop now starts up the first time some of the time and some of the time it doesnt! I continue to get a black screen on boot up which gives me three options.
1.Use a prior version of windows
2.Start windows normally....this is the one i always select
3.Use Recoverty console....this is the option i used to use which gave me the message...File: \ CMLDR ...Application is missing or corrupt. Status...OxOOOOOOf.

So i decided to start it up using the Recovery Console and sure enough I received the same error message as above .I dont understand that because i thought a clean Win 7 install would at least load my missiinng file CMLDR but apparently it didnt.

I was hoping i could totally eliminate the black screen giving me the three options listed above but that didnt happen or i dont know how to do it thinking the clean install of windows would include it..apparently not..Now i cant even get the pc to boot up the first time every time. I turn it off and restart it once or twice and for some reason it then boots up and works fine.

Do you have any suggestions at this point short of my formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch? The pc seems to have slowed down since the clean install and i have used several variations of the start up to try to speed it up without any real success.
This desktop is 4 1/2 years old and i only have 4gb of memory installed. It will handle 8gb but i dont want to spend the money for that if it really wont help it run faster.

Thanks for any help you can provide.Fortunately my HP laptop works fine and i can use Easy Transfer to reload a lot of my desktop if i do end up cleaning the hard drive.

Run some hard-drive diagnostics and follow these steps:
Find your hard-drive manufacturer and run their tests.

Additional Tests:

  • Chipset Drivers
  • Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
  • If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Use this command with Disk Check:

blue..thank you. i ran a har drive utility on Hitachi site and it checked out ok. ran the dsk chk and now it seems to be booting up normally ...i shut it down and started it 3 times so maybe it is fixed. i wonder what would happen if i ran the erecovery console again which is where i get the corrupt or missing file message.I think i will leave well enough alone at this point.

Do i access the windows boot manager via the bios? i want to reduce the amount of time before it starts to open windows. i have done this before but too long ago to recall how to find it. Either way thanks very much for your help.

Welcome, and DO NOT delete the Boot Manager, if you delete it you will have a unbootable system.
