Resolution stuck on 1366x768 - no other options from which to choose.

We have a Dell Optiplex 990, which has on-board Intel HD 2000 video. VGA cable goes from it to a Crestron multimedia switcher. From there, one VGA goes to a NEC M311x projector and another to a Dell 1911 monitor.

The only available resolution is 1366x768 - nothing else is listed. We've tried the most recent video driver straight from Intel and the latest one available from Dell's support page for the Optiplex 990.

If we uninstall those and reboot, the video adapter shows up in device manager as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. And then we can change the resolution to whatever we want. For now, that is workable.

Any ideas why it's behaving as it does with the Intel HD driver?

My only starter suggestion is to test another monitor if you have one and see if that has similar issues. Right now it'd be hard to tell if this is a monitor, driver or OS issue.

Thanks for the suggestions, Diosoth and cyclops. I have not tried going directly from the PC to a monitor - I'll give that a try.

As far as going into advanced settings, I've been there many times. There aren't any other options (see first two pics). It looks like I can make a "custom resolution" for what should be a normal one.

I attached a screenshot that shows what the screen looks like with the base MS VGA driver as well.

Question - Does VGA allow for bi-directional communication with the monitor? I know if I use DVI, for instance, the monitor should spit back to the PC the resolutions it is capable of showing. Does VGA do the same thing?

Thanks - I should have read your original message more closely. I've posted a pic of what I see when I go into List All Modes.

I can choose a few other resolutions. However at the resolution we want (1280x1024), the color depth is only 256 colors, so it looks like crap. I'll have a bit more time this afternoon to try a few other things out.

First thing I notice and question is why does the computer indicate that your monitor is a Generic Non-PnP Monitor? Gotta get that fixed before anything else is going to work.

osustw, been reading your post and doing some digging. Yes, VGA supports bi-directional comms. 4 pins in the cable connectors are dedicated to that function. This leads me to question your cable. Do you have another cable you could try?

For some weird reason, Dell has pulled the driver. See here:
Install driver for monitor Dell P1911 - Monitors Forum - Peripherals - Dell Community

This is exactly what I've found. I can download "a" driver, but it only has the files described in that link. I have a couple of friends who work for Dell - I just emailed them both to see if they can get their hands on the inf, as we don't have the CD anymore.

Regarding the VGA cable, we do have other cables. That said, since you mentioned that VGA does have bi-directional communication, that makes me think of a potential issue. From computer, VGA -> Crestron box. From Crestron, VGA -> Projector and VGA -> Monitor. I wonder if the Crestron box is sending out a "HEY, 1366x768 only" signal? I'll try a new VGA to the Crestron switcher.

Thanks for your suggestions. I do appreciate it!

D-Sub port sometimes tend to hold maximum resolution of 1366x768, in my case it's when I plug it my PC to my LG TV using that port.

I have the same issue with Optiplex 790. It's not a hardware issue in my case because when i try to install windows 8 it goes to the right resolution. Has noone figured this out yet?
