restore point growing in size

I have 4 restore points.
one of 700Mbyte
one of 877 Mbyte
one of 7,5 Gbyte
one of 6,4 Gbyte

the restore point of 6,4 Gbyte was originally 750 Mbyte but suddenly it growed to 6,4 Gbyte: how is this possible? How can a restore point grow?

I don't know whether the restore point of 7,5 Gbyte was of that size at the creation or it did grow to that size.

I don't know if the restore point of 6,4 Gbyte is my last restore point: it can't see this in treesize

My limit for the total size of all the restore points is 19 Gbyte.

Hi louis14. Please provide screenshot from explorer or the restore window you are viewing the files within. Provide as much more information as you can, like how you have set up restore and how often.

I have attached the treesize view of the system volume information directory
I have attached the view of the rstrui.exe window where you have an overview of the restore points.
My windows 7 home version is a dutch version therefore I explain the types of the restore points("herstel punt" in dutch) in the rstrui view:
dutch->english
verwijderen->removing
handmating->manual
systeem->system
I've also attached an overview of the system information directory in the wiztree window

in my configuration of the restore points I have choosen: "system settings and previous versions of files"
the drive where restore points are enabled is c: the drive where my windows is installed and my data files are located.
the max total size is 19Gbyte
there is no other configuration in windows 7 I think.
I have 2 (automatic)restore points for removing installations, one manual restore point and one automatic system restore point.

Hey Louis, quick question. Just curious if you use avast antivirus?
There was a bug in some of the older versions of Avast NG (secure virtual machine service) that was causing the volume shadow copies to grow by a significant amount.

The only thing I can think would be impacting the size of those jumps in size is that it coincides with the point at which you were removing programs and the system is storing greater amounts of data because the uninstalls affected a lot of files with some associations. I hope some one else has some ideas to throw out here.

I don't use Avast anti-virus, I use Kasperky but Kasperky 2015 had also a bug: it deleted from time to time the restore points.Now I upgraded to Kasperky 2016 and it doesn't delete the restore points anymore.

You have Macrium Backup images, right ?

If you need to restore/recover would you use a Restore Point or a Macrium Backup Image ?
Some people use both Backup Images and Restore Points.
Some people only use Backup Images.
Some people only use Restore Points - that's the default setup with a new PC.

Relying on Restore Points only is the most risky, just read the threads on this forum from folks that only use them, and see how many problems there are because they don't work or are gone when needed.

You store User data (documents, pictures, music, videos, etc.) on the drive, the Users folder is > 250 GB. Would you consider moving your User data to a different partition or HD ? Many people don't store User data on the [C] drive. That way the [C] drive can be restored, re-installed, etc. without losing any User data. It would also make your Macrium backup images much smaller, and run faster. Imaging really isn't needed for backing up User data. Other backup methods are better for User data. It is needed for backing up the [C] drive with the OS and installed programs. If you want to use Restore Points, i wouldn't be concerned with the size of those restore points. If you want to use less space on the [C] drive, moving User Data off the [C] drive is what i would work on. fyi, Macrium Reflect free version 6 also offers Differentials, so only changes since the last Full backup are included in the Differential. I use Macrium backup images, I don't use Restore Points, I don't store User data on the [C] drive. I've been using Differentials in V6 and they work reliably for me. I use them as a "Restore Point alternative" for a "quick" backup when i want to test something new, and don't feel i need to create a new Full backup. With 240 GB of free space, you're not running critically short of free space, so you have no immediate problem. I just wonder if it's worth being concerned with the restore point size, but only you can answer that.

Thanks for you explanation.
I could believe my growing restore points are a bug of my anti virus Kaspersky.
I cannot move my Users map to another partition or harddisk because my PC is a laptop with only the possibility of one drive and I have one big partition (C and two little partitions (D:recovery and F:hp_tools).
Until now i did not use a restore point but I did already 2 times restore an image.
You only use imaging for os and programs: this answers my question about what to do in case of an ssd and a hdd: not taking an image of the ssd and an image of the hdd but only an image of the ssd and other backup tool for the hdd (in case all programs are on the ssd).

Maybe I have to start with differential imaging.
Do you use the reflect v6 feature:
"delete full backups and differentiall after X weeks/days"
or
"keep max number of full backups and differentials"
I suppose it's difficult to delete full backup images and associated differentials manual?

I don't use any of the Macrium Retention Rules to auto delete backup images.
I prefer to take care of that myself manually.
