After seeing many problems on howto get rid of Vista or XP.
a simple question and the reply is easy
How many people are using a Partition of C:\ to install Vista or Win7.
How many people use a totally different HD to install Vista or Win7.
reason: if your using a partition of HD=C:\ the name change
if your using a total different HD then Boot name remain the same.
I use a different HD. so C:\ = Vista all the time
L:\ = Win7 all the time

O-HD= c, d, e = Vista
1-HD= f, g, h = XP
2-HD=k,l = Win7

answer:
Yes a partition of HD with C:\
No a Different HD.

From what I've seen, quite a few people are dual-booting and some even quad-booting with Ubuntu, XP and Vista. Personally, I run Windows 7 x64 (build 7201) as my one and only OS. Most people here will tell you the same, unless there's a very specific need to run another OS, Win7 post RC is certainly stable enough to run as a sole OS.

As for performance, I'm not partial to partitions or using multiple OS' but there's no reason you can't. I've just had too many bad experiences with bad drives. ;)

Running XP and 7 on the same drive in 2 partitions. My main data store is on a 2nd HDD. I use XP for playing COD online since I get better FPS in XP. I need to start saving, think I'll build a new system when 7 comes out...

Me, I originally went dual-boot between Vista x64 and Windows 7, but about 3 days later decided that Windows 7 was stable enough to use as a primary OS, so I took Vista off. Not because I didn't like Vista, but because I happily discovered that I no longer needed it.

All my data is stored on 7 other hard drives - Which is the one primary reason why I simply love the Libraries feature of Windows 7.

If I really do need to run older apps (usually just until I can get updates), I'll now be using Windows 7 XP Mode.
