sapphire AGP 4650 aero glitches and slow games

Hi i have a semi-aged P4 sytem comprising of:

asus p4s800 mobo
P4 3Ghz ht
sapphire AGP 4650 1gig ddr2
2 gig ram
audigy 2 sound
win 7

everything installs ok, win 7, all drivers, (eg radeon 10.4) and software etc...

the issue i have is when ever i 'enable desktop composition' in the visual effects
options in system properties, i get a wallpaper which is completely blocky and
some strange glitches on the start button, pc user picture and the 'minimise/
restore down/close window buttons, on the top right of all windows.

I have tried both the sapphire and the ati drivers from 9.11 to 10.4 but still the
same probs exist.

This same thing happened to me when the power cable in my cpu was not connected properly! try checking that

after scouring this forum i came accross a post about a similar issue. it suggested trying the XP hotfix drivers.

have just done this and now all my games play correctly and smoothly. :0)

but as expected the aero features do not work.

its interesting tho because my glitch issues must be connected to the aero section of the win 7 hotfix driver.
as games are unplayable when using the win 7 agp hotfix driver. hmmmm :0(

It isn't necessarily the video card driver that is the problem. Most of the time in these situations it is the lack of a properly working AGP driver (not to be confused with the video card driver), that allows the video card driver to work properly.

can attest to that. It also isn't just ATI AGP cards that run into this as it can and does happen to Nvidia AGP cards.

ahhh, yes. the agp driver, that would sound logical.

the only one i can get is: sis agp 1.17. it says this is for xp.

would this one be ok to try?

1.21 is the latest actually,

I'd link to SIS directly but their site is one of the slowest around.

No idea if it will work or not, but you can try. Windows 7 comes with a generic AGP driver (located in the C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository), that from what I can see provides just enough basic functionality for an AGP card to work.

If you do try the XP driver I would try installing manually through Device Manager by locating the SIS AGP under System Devices and selecting "Update driver", select "Let me choose" then browse to where you extracted the driver folder to and pointing it to,

agp121\AGP\current\WINXP

agp121\AGP\current\WINXP

but it says: the current driver is the best one???

so ran the 1.21 setup.exe

it seems to have updated my agp driver, but the problem still persists. :0(

having run the 1.21 setup.exe, i now have another driver option in my update driver software.

If i pick 'let me choose from a list on my computer' there are now 2 sis agp drivers:
sis agp ver: 5.1.2600.2180 (09/12/2004) and sis agp ver:7.2.0.1230 (20/10/2006)

but sadly both give the same outcome.

one thing i did notice is that on the sis website it says ver: 1.21 is dated 04/01/2005
i dont understand why the dates dont tie up :0(
