I have just got hold of a second hand monitor from a friend. I want to add it to my current PC set-up so I can use an extended desktop for work. I have bought a VGA to 2xVGA Video Splitter. My original monitor is in what I presume is the primary input and is working fine. However the second monitor is showing no image at all.

I know how to work a computer when its working but am pretty clueless when it comes to the more technical aspects.

Please help!

To further clarify, when I switch the computer on the second monitor mirrors the primary monitor until the primary monitor reaches the login page. At that point it comes up with a message saying "Input Not Supported" and then switches itself off after a few minutes.

Something like this what you are using,

Startech.Com VGASPL1VV Vga to 2X Vga Video Splitter Cable-M/F, 1-Feet: Amazon.ca: Computers & Tablets

Even if you can get it to work you're not going to get the desired extended desktop. Using a splitter like that will only allow for duplicating what is on each. To use extended mode you need to use two separate connections. Looking at the specs for your computer,

HP Support document - HP Support Center

the only way you're going to get extended displays (or two monitors in general) to work is to add a video card, as the motherboard only has the single VGA output.
