Setting that makes the screen dim when it's not white

I stand corrected. My original problem has returned. The screen dims when I'm not on a screen which is nearly all white (and I rarely am).

Bummer.

Perhaps the monitor is aging. If so, then software might not be able to correct for that.

No. It's definitely a setting. I know because I had this problem in the past. I think the solution had something to do with the graphics card settings.

Now the dimming only occurs when I am on battery, but not when plugged in.

I have desktop pc's so i don't have the auto dim / adjust brightness option (i can't test it).
Did you check your laptop settings for this option ?
If you have this option, try adjusting it and see if it helps.

Source for this pic: Windows 7 : Automatically dim the display screen [ Power Settings ]

If that doesn't help, in post #11 you stated
"This problem just appeared out of the blue, probably after a system update"

If/when i get a new problem, i would uninstall updates, to try and find what update caused the problem.
If i can't figure it out that way, i restore my most recent working system backup image and work forward installing updates.
