Setting up a home network & pswd is asked even though I never.....

I tried to set up a home network using my laptop (Win 8.1) with my home PC (Win 7 HomePrem X64) On my laptop it recognizes my PC (perhaps because I already plugged in an Ethernet cable, or due to it being already set up by my router, or wi-fi, I don't know which). Anyhow, on the Win 8.1 it says I can join my PC and then going through the process it asks me for a password. BUT no password exists. I never set one up with my PC so I can't understand why it is insisting on one.
Basically I want to send files through and fro the fasted way possible. The fasted not the best. In other words if its through my Ethernet good, if it's better via a USB cable, so be it.
Back in the Win XP days I used to do it via a special USB cable (USB on both ends and on one side it had a fat processor or something- I no longer have such a cable, given away when the XP was given away)

re:" Could it be that it is looking for the Routers Password?" I thought of that but it being so long and complicated I did not want to take a chance and give it a pwd that it did not belong to and then being stuck with it (on the other end/pc as well.

Your pc must be different from mine because such a choice is not given--the next button is greyed out until you put something in (the only time I saw what you are describing is in logging in to your computer when you did not set up a pwd, but this is different.
Anyhow, going back to the router, I prefer not to use the router and do a direct connection instead via an ethernet cable if possible but the thing is since a wi-fi connection exists I assume my PC and labtop think this is the only way I want to use it. I tried setting up a new connection and this won't work either hence why I am saying this

If you want to do a direct connection try an Ethernet crossover cable.

You could also try setting up a Homegroup if you don't want to buy the crossover cable.
