On My PC!
So I set up an old PC as a server box and installed windows server 2008. The trouble I am having is that i have never set up a server before and I am not sure how to share the data from the server to the other computers on the network. I created a workgroup on the server and set my desktop to the same workgroup, however I cannot access the files on the server. When I click on the Network tab in windows explorer I can see the server but when I double click on it to get at the files it asks me to enter a username and password, neither of which I have or even set up. I have a feeling I am going to need a lot of help with server 2008 because this is my first runaround with it.

If there is any other info that would make this problem easier to solve just let me know. Thanks

You'll need to set up shares on the network box. If you just try to navigate to the server, you'll be prompted to put in the name and password of a user account on that server.

Impossible to cover this in the forums, really. Best bet is to get to a local library and see if they have a book for setting up Windows Server. I did that a few years ago to set up my first server (Server 2003). Lots of reading, but it was well worth it.

Good luck.

This requires that you change the lanman server parimeters in order to get Windows 7 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 7 machines that need to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

The screen shots below should be helpful.

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

So all I have to do is change those settings on all win7 PC's that are in the same workgroup as the server and everything should work? I assume that I would also need to set the sharing settings on the server box as well like Woz had said? Thank you for the explanation, hopefully it does the trick, if not I think I may have to go out and get a book.
