Hi

Just recently I reinstalled Windows 7 Professional x64. My PC was working fine for about a week and I was running SFC scans and CHKDSK to make sure things weren't going wrong as I was having corruption problems before the reinstall. Seemingly out of no where as in I turned off the PC one night and turned it on the next morning some of my files became corrupt according to SFC and from time to time my PC will completely freeze up or become extremely unresponsive to the point where I have to manually shut it down by holding the power button.

I've looked all over the internet for solutions and have tried to replace the corrupt files with clean ones from my bootable USB. Unfortunately either I did something wrong or it just did not work as I am the in the same spot where I started.

Any help is very much appreciated and sorry if this is in the wrong forum topic, I wasn't quite sure where to post it.

Here is my latest SFC scan snippet of just the problems it found. The PC is running fine, no freezes or anything at the moment.

Don`t mess with it anymore, just reinstall windows, this time do not do any updates. Run a SFC, does it show corrupt files now ?

The thing is you are installing an update which causes system file corruption. (Hard to beleieve, but that`s what`s caused it both times)

The most recent one I found was an update to Silverlight, windows would not let me uninstall it, so I just used an Image and hid that silverlight update. Don`t need it anyway.

My motto, Do Not install an update if you do not need it, and of course never set windows update to automatic.

And please, always create system images when windows is running perfectly. :)

Hi,
Thanks the other thread that was referred to confused me a tad :)

I'm not sure which update causes sfc error AddRam is referring too

But I haven't had any errors in sfc except in win-10 where it's supposed to be normal :)

But I do have about 21 or so Optional and recommended updates I avoid for various reasons
I usually only load Important updates first and cull through the optional section updates.
Keeping in mind I also exclude recommended updates from being mixed up with Important updates in update settings.

A lot of weird stuff going on with clean installing now days but it has gotten a little easier I guess with this new rollup
http://www.sevenforums.com/news/396236-simplifying-updates-windows-7-8-1-a.html

Otherwise to expedite an install it has been interesting :)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to clean and partition my internal HDD since I didn't have anything of importance on it before. Then reinstall the OS. No problems with the SFC scan now and running backups to an external.

One question (probably a stupid one) can I drag and move the files created by Windows Backup in my external? I would like to organise more than what is currently is as it is just throwing the image into the HDD.

Hi,
Indeed :)

Sweet thing is you can mount an existing image and copy and paste a single file out of it :)
Then simply unmount it after.

No, do not play with he image file, tell it where you want it to go when you create it then leave it alone. As time goes by, your programs are installed, windows is fully updated, and you`re 100% happy with windows etc, then you can delete the image you made and create a new one, but don`t move or mess with any images you create.

I also recommend using both windows imaging and Macrium.

And please clarify to everyone exactly what you mean by backup, as a Backup and an Image are 2 totally separate things.
