"Share..." button grayed out

Is it normal that this button is grayed out for every folder I try to share (even if I own it)?

Permissions:
Code:
Allow, Admins, Full contr., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, SYSTEM, Full contr., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, Auth Users, Modify, D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files
Allow, Users, Read & exec., D: (Inherited From), folder + sub + files

I always need to click on the "Advanced sharing..." button.

I have a bad feeling I might have problems with permissions cause I can only access shares when I set the share's permissions to "Full control" for "Everyone" (and delete all the others).

TIA for your input!

D: - a partition on the system disk. But it doesn't matter where the folder's located - everywhere I get the same behavior.

So if the folder's unshared this button shouldn't be grayed out? Then I can say "Redmond, we got a problem!" :D

No, it's a function of whether you've got the "sharing wizard" functionality enabled. With the "wizard" (simple file sharing), that button becomes available. Without wizard/simple, the button is greyed out and you're in full (advanced) sharing mode.

Case closed: it seems that you have to explicitly add a permission for "Guest" to a share if you want to allow password-free connections.

Interesting and good to know. Was quickly trying to share something last night with sharing wizard enabled but kept getting username/password prompt and didnt have time to figure out why.
Thx

So then what point is there to the Everyone permissions if it doesn't include everyone? Is there supposed to be an "Anyone" that we use? MS is stupid.

Also note that you must have Guest account turned on in User Accounts. Nothing will tell you this except when it still doesn't fscking work for no gorram reason.

I HAD a share setup fine and dandy, from this 7 machine here, and used it before on my wife's netbook. Tonight it stopped working for no apparent reason. (Scratch that. Last night. I've been working on this for hours apparently. STUPID MS.)

What is so hard about plugging into a home LAN, saying "Share this folder, with Everyone", and then going to another machine and accessing your files? There is no reason that this should not work.

does your network adapter have "client for Microsoft networks" added.

If not click any item in the networking tab of your adapters properties.
click install
highlight client
select add
Client for Microsoft Networks should be highlighted
click OK
