Solved Sharing Windows 7 to XP - is this an alternative solution?

Being unable to enter a specific object/user (ie my own XP account) from my XP laptop in the Sharing or Security Tabs of the Properties of my Win 7 laptop's User Documents folder, because the only recognised “Locations” are on the Win 7 laptop, I am grateful for Cheemag's first link.on a recnt thread: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/278246-no-network-7-xp.html

I added “Everyone” in the Security Tab of My Documents >Properties, as recommended in the second post on the tutorial thread that he linked to. This worked, thank you!

However I have now experimented further in the Security Tab by adding from the Locations button the listed location "NETWORK" to the permission, and removing "Everyone". This also works, and seems a narrower definition than "Everyone".

Still a security risk, but since I have a home network and am the only user of both these laptops in my own home, if I take one away with me I will be careful to disable all Sharing on both pcs till I return it. But on reflection, modifiying the Security Tab permissions is not the same as modifying "Sharing" ,so I would probably need to remove NETWORK altogether from the Security Tab before travelling with the laptop and using some other network?

Is it a valid solution? Any further advice, please?

There are a few choices to fix that. I would make the root problem go away to begin with so you don't have to mess with permissions.

I think that, when you try to connect from XP to Win7 it will ask for a user/password if it can't login true? Ideally, you assign permissions to a local user, then use that user/password when asked from another computer so it enters and gains his security accesses. Anyone that doesn't knows the password won't be able to even view anything there.

No need to mess with the security permissions. Just go to the Network and Sharing Center, then click on the Advanced Sharing Settings.

Once there simply turn off Network Discovery and turn off File and Printer sharing. This will make your machine invisible on the network and prevent anyone from accessing your files.

You can also use the Public folders to share with the XP machine. Just enable sharing on the Sharing Tab of the C:>Users>Public folder.

thank you Chev 65! that's handy - I'd already turned those two options in ADvnced Sharing Settings on, so I ought to have though of turnign them off! I've actually removed 'NETWORK' from the permssion now as 'Everyone' is virtually the same. I had hoped originally that permitting "NETWORK" as a location would enable me to specify my XP laptop and account, but still couldn't see how to do that?

And thank you Alejandro85 , I take the point that if I restored Password Protected Sharing and my passwords that woudl help the security situation

PS I can't fidn the wee scale for Rep points - but I guess the problem is solved now
