Solved Should I Get Windows 10?

Men of few words :)
You can still join the insiders program and try it before you replace your 7 install
https://insider.windows.com/

You can also run it on a VM or plan a dual boot with 7! There are some options available for trying 10 as well as still keeping 7 around! Things to know first?

1)First install of 10 to be a free install? Upgrade over existing or as was done here over temp install of 7 with SP1 still required.

2)Upgrade installs whether downloading the Media Creation Tool or waiting for the download through the Windows updates can prove to be buggy where a second repair install by way of seeing a 10 upgrade over 10 to repair the incomplete initial upgrade or once the upgrade is activated perform a clean install to either a separate partition or drive.

3)When going to upgrade the first time around or when planning a clean install review the guides for this over at Ten Forums as that can save you time and a world of headaches!

4) First backup all of your important files if planning to upgrade over the existing copy of 7 and be sure any additional hard drives without any OS on them are "Unplugged"! as it was fast learned here during the first failed attempts at getting the downloaded and saved to drive ISO disk images written to usb flash drive made bootable by both the MC tool and 3rd party program wouldn't see 10 go on! The boot files ended up on one of the two storage drives that had been since removed and the temp install/recovery folders on the other storage resulting in not seeing 10 go on until review of the clean install guide.

5) When going to check on system hardware compatibility the Windows logo icon will detect and record the hardware information for you and indicate that your system is compatible if you are going to be able to see 10 go on. When clicking to reserve a free copy expect the first of two emails to indicate it has been reserved and a second to come later suggesting not waiting for several days or weeks with a link to the download page for the Media Creation tools which can see an immediate online upgrade, skip to the next option of creating a USB Installation Key with a 4gb flash drive, skip to the next again to see the option to burn to dvd or save as and iso download.

Those screens come after you have selected 10 Home or Pro, 32bit or 64bit or the combination 32/64 download which will not burn to disk but will require at least an 6gb flash drive if you can find one? while 8gb are common place. That's due to the nearly 6gb size of the combined iso download! And of course if you had previously heard that Windows 8 saw the Start menu replaced by the Metro screen you won't have to worry about getting some 3rd party Start menu replacement program as 10 has seen the return of the Start menu!

The new version also has some other interesting features being brought in while performance is close to what you see in 7 due to the new reduction of memory used per process efforts. While 10 is slightly larger to support the dual platform OS strategy of Desktop/Mobile it's not a "resource hog" while the installation takes as long as a rule as it took Vista and 8 didn't get to try 8.1 here at all while 7 on average is only 20 minutes or so seeing the first restart at 12 minutes.

Compatibility? That will always be a problem for any newer version while most everything besides the next newer build for your antivirus or firewall program will likely be a must since 10 is three versions newer then 7. Yet an old Legacy/9x pc game goes right onto the 64bit 10 and runs as usual?! Got to hand it to MS there! :D
Little wordy :)

Most of the problems caused by installing Windows 10 are caused by PEBCAK - the operator not reading/following instructions, or installing using the ISO because they get impatient waiting to get the update through WU (or because of an interfering AV, which should be uninstalled, not just switched off during the install).

I had read that requires specific hardware to install the W10(when they started talking about Windows 10). Right now I have the page but I think it had to do with motherboards.

But as to the question it is better to wait a year to be optimized to 100%.

All the hardware selected by myself. I never imagined upgrade my PC :)
When clicking on the 10 app you see on the task bar your hardware profile is examined and the result of whether or not your system is compatible are displayed as part of the process of reserving the free copy via upgrade process only. Following the guide over at Ten Forums there for the upgrade or subsequent clean install of the new version is certainly the first smart move to make since that will take you through things one step at a time.

The dual boot here of seeing 10 as the host/boot drive along with 7 has been working out quite well in fact compared to the headaches previously seen with the 7/8 CP dual boot where both versions would suddenly fail to start up. First it was 8 added into the 7 BCD as the new entry followed by the PC Refresh of 8 when it suddenly as well as 7 failed to start up normally due to the unexplained result of disk errors on two separate drives I dual boot across.

So far no such bad endings have been seen with 10 now three versions newer then 7 and all you need is the latest version of EasyBCD to play well while the 2.0.1 version still works on 10 as well as a number of other things except you may need a newer version of this or that as far as your av program as well as a few other softwares. And the av program isn't always a concern since the 10 installer unloads the 7 desktop as it works during the upgrade as any other upgrade would be shutting down the previous version's processes as well as apps during the install as it packs things up in the Windows.old when opted to save files.

For trying 10 out having a second drive and temp install of 7, 8, or 8.1 to upgrade over will allow you to preserve the existing 7 installation if not by way of full system image backup of 7 ahead of time to try out the new version for 30 days when you will no longer be able to revert back as long as the Window.old folder is still present on the drive as many opt to see that cleaned off fast with the DiskCleanup tool in 10.

Some don't like the new Start menu while the tile factor there is nothing as severe as looking at 8's "Metro in you face"! approach MS has with that one! And as I knew back in '12 it would take MS a few more versions to start shaping things up as far as bringing in a dual platform type OS as typically seen in the past. As for a year wait how many waited a year to try 7 out? when that was the new kid on the street?

As I recall people were jumping on it during the October 2009 launch! I'll likely wait now for the new version's usb flash drive to see SP1 or what will be before buying the installation key no longer seeing optical media coming from MS as far as Windows is concerned. That will be full install media only which still includes the upgrade option as any other full install media has.

I found it. In the requirements also mentioned UEFI 2.3.1. It's necessary ?

I think waiting a year is much :p For W7/8/8.1 there are still a few more years of support then we will have to use it. W10 It will only be free for a year.

All the hardware selected by myself. I never imagined upgrade my PC :)
Support for 7 lasts until early 2020 whlle 10 will see a full 10yrs. of support until 2026 but only seen now as a free upgrade over the previous versions! The full install media on read only usb flash drives is presently available at the MS online store for purchasing 10 outright if you have a new build just put together but lacking any OS to upgrade from. No more dvds to scratch!

As for the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface seen on newer model Intel boards mostly the Secure Boot option in the bios setup program has to be disabled until the installation of 10 is complete. This has been one issue where Legacy booting from a flash drive is necessary to see the installation work. Here I have a few older AMD models boards that don't run into that any and saw 10 go on as the 8 Customer Preview did back in 2012 without a hitch as far as the installation went.

There is one thing to note and why some upgrades to 10 are running into problems not so much with 8 or 8.1 but upgrades from 7 to 10 being three versions different where 8 brought in the new Secure boot process of invalidating other OSs. With 10 also seeing the same the upgrade from the newer to latest seems to be going smoother for many while other upgrades from 7 to 10 come out buggy! Once activated however you can perform the second clean install to generally see working results and find 10 will run quite stable.

Here I set up the two desktops with a 10/7 dual boot across two drives adding a second drive in on the second mini tower and the 7 laptop which only saw the upgrade followed by the clean 32 install which was then to see a 3rd 64bit install. Been busy with installations lately! :sarc: The only thing I couldn't do however on the laptop after getting rid of the HP bloatwares was resize the OS primary where now I have to go back and nuke the drive entirely to fill in the 17gb space left by the two small parts! Those weren't even recovery partitions but for HP and 3rd party apps only! Can do without those!

The biggest error is not reading the privacy and terms of use

Yes, a respected, mainly internet, forum over this side has severe concerns about how much control of personal data and activity is capable of being handed over to M'soft under the terms.

The other thing not liked is lack of control over Windows Update

Yes the terms of use are pretty wild,
Outlook.com/ Hotmail/.. Onedrive on steroids applying to the entire os thrown in with some key loggers just for good measure :/
But if using a M$ account I suppose I can understand but I certainly would never use a M$ account on a os
So that alone is a no deal.

Windows updates is not a deal breaker but the above is.

The option to "Defer updates" is right there in plain sight to prevent updates from simply going on automatically or schedule system restart notifications. You simply have to look a little more closely at how the new settings are presented.

The main reason for all this of course is being that 10 is dual platform not just pc only but touchscreen tablet as well when set for tablet mode. Of course you can always go with 8 which saw many familiar things simply stripped out of Windows! That was an eye sore for many!

Here I plan to keep going as long as possible as well as examining the newer versions to come as well as 10 which has been doing good once past the initial upgrade issues.

No don't!

I don't recommend anyone update, upgrade to windows spy 10. It is the worst and most intrusive windows ever. Windows 8 was bad but 10 is the worst.

Just look at all the data Microsoft collects and uses. The NSA will love windows 10 as they can see all that data. I would advise not to store anything on the cloud as your files can been seen, viewed by Microsoft and the NSA I'm afraid.

Any good business will store it's customer details on it's own storage systems and not on the cloud. Well I hope so. Save your files to a USB hard drive and will be much safer than cloud services on 10.

I am staying with XP, Vista and windows 7 but windows 7 will be my last MS OS. I am moving to lunix after that.

That I am afraid is "Utter Paranoia" and far from fact! 10 isn't spyware but fortunately as it turned an actual progression in the line from 7 far more then seen with 8! and still an improvement over 8.1. And what the heck is "luna ix"? Hate to say what that sounds like! :roflmao: ( i no know may luna tics?)

Presently with 10 in a dual boot with 7 the results are actually favorable compared to the "Disk Error" mess seen when trying it with the 8 Customer Preview back in '12! If you added the boot enter into 7's BCD or a PC Refresh added 7 in and you ran with both both crashed! The Disk Check would have to be scheduled manually to get 7 running again as well as for the 8 CP at the time and see both version isolated from each other!

With 10 NADA! Smooth going once you get past the upgrade issues that can come up on you forcing a fresh clean install once 10 is activated which is automatic without any product key when used as a free upgrade. MS has also done away with optical media and moved onto usb media instead with write protected full version usb sticks for sale.

This is why the Media Creation Tool you can use to download 10 with is good for having the option to either write the usb install key or burn the 10 iso to a blank dvd-r. Just finished upgrading a 2012 7 Home Premium 32bit laptop to the 64bit 10 Home edition first by upgrade followed by a 32bit 10 clean install later replaced with the 64bit once seeing that 10 would activate properly on it.

10 won't install as fast as 7 however but more like the speed you saw with Vista or 8 installs due to it being a larger dual platform OS offering the Tablet mode as well as default desktop mode. And the new Start menu now back allows you to pin whatever you want there as well as on the taskbar! Despite having a tile section that can reshaped and resized to an extent to make it actually quite well orgainzed.

I seem to remember that both Vista and Windows 7 went through the same phase of being touted as 'Spyware OS' back when they were launched.
The unfamiliar scares people - which is understandable - but while caution is a good thing, paranoia isn't.

Does anyone really think that either MS or the NSA has the time (or resources) to trawl through everyone's real returns - let alone the amount of data that some people imagine is being sent?
MS has auto-scanned the data sent back through the Customer Experience Program since Vista was launched, with the result that problems with updates have been isolated and pulled much quicker than used to be the case, and (believe or not) the qualiy of updates has almost certainly improved. The perception of 'worse' updates is possibly the result of both increasing paranoia, and the reduced level of competence of the average user.
Gone are the days where 90% of users had a hankering to program or control their machines. Nowadays, 90% of users 'just want it to work' without the hassle of checking for updates or fixing problems themselves. MS has to operate in an environment where the re are an almost infinite number of software and hardware variables, many of which were designed by incompetent programmers/designers/manufacturers.
Apple OS's simply won't work on hardware that hasn't been signed off by Apple - and it's this sign-off that makes a lot of money for Apple.
Android OS's are almost the same.
The MS Hardware Certification scheme is a step towards the Google way of doing things, but MS has to tread warily simply because of the huge hardware base already in existence. Both Apple and Google started from what was a minimal hardware base, and have controlled that base from day one. MS took the other extreme and tried (and mostly succeeded) to support almost any hardware in existence, and is still trying to do so. To be able to do that without spending really huge sums, it needs data - and lots of it - to identify problems and allow their programmers to produce solutions. Such solutions aren't always right the first time around, but a process of iteration gets them there in the end.
The old idea of the Beta-test has necessarily gone out of the window (pun intended) since the hardware and software base is now so huge that rather than the few thousand Beta-testers that used to be required to fine-tune updates/upgrades, it would and does require millions of them. That was the reason for moving from OS Beta programs to the Preview program - and for curtailing the free issue of licenses to OS Beta-testers.
Yes the end-user is now being used to beta-test products - but the 'beta product' is of a much higher quality than it used to be. User expectations however frequently diverge from the MS longer-term targets, and occasionally MS has to backtrack somewhat in the next iteration (Start menu, anyone?).
The world is changing quicker now that at any time since 1981 - and MS has to change even quicker, since it got stuck in the quagmire that was XP RTM and had to pretty much re-write the OS from the ground up for SP2. That lost them more than 2 years in development time as work on almost everything else stopped - including Vista. I was present at a demo of Vista back in March 2003 in Seattle - and some of the stuff they demo'd there only got into the OS eventually with the release of Win7 6.5 years later.
Since 2004 MS has been playing catch-up with itself, as well as the rest of the world.

I think they may have finally managed it with Win 10

Well as I mentioned before I don't have any immediate plans on dumping 7 after running it for the last 6yrs. starting off with the beta builds to the present dual boot not only one system but two with 10! If 7 was to go tomorrow I would end up with a pair of 10 machines until a dual boot with 10.1? 11? 12? comes about.

You have about 4+yrs. left before 7 gets the axe in 2020 as XP did a year ago and Vista will be seeing soon enough next year! What was first seen with 7 bringing in the WinMin kernel after Vista got the "Bloated OS" rep has seen quite a bit of progress in 10 since the same processes now use less memory and why the minimum for system specifications hasn't changed any since 7! At least that is another progressive trend. Too bad it takes three versions newer to be realized!

What comes after 64bit would be 128bit and at this point only be experimental since the software market is loaded primarily with 32bit apps having the occasional 64bit alternative. That would be a totally different architecture seen there.

The other alternate for a new file system could well be for server application. The thing MS has been working on mainly has been for the dual platform OS between Desktop and Mobile. This is where 8 got off to a bad start by how that was handled seeing things stripped and now with 10 seeing some things being brought back like Vista saw Fat16, Fat32 support gone while 7 had to see that brought back for all the newer usb devices with onboard memory using Fat.

Night hawk it's not Paranoia it's all about on the internet. Microsoft windows 10 is very intrusive. Windows 10 incorporates finger prints and wants people to use 3d face scans, to log in with. Who do you think needs and wants all that data? Microsoft and the NSA.

The NSA don't have better things to do as that is what they do, collect data and spy on people. Have you heard of Edward snowden? He helped expose them. Just a shame that many people can't see what is going on and the NSA do spy on you.

Wonder why Microsoft are given windows 10 away for free? Well so they can get as many gullible customers to use there spy OS and hand over all that data to Microsoft and the NSA. No such thing as a free lunch.

I still will never install windows 10 NSA addition, ever and no one will convince me to do so.

Who signs into their user account with facial recognition and finger print scans? Not the home users!

Security at large corporations with their own sensitive areas to prevent corporate spying as well as government agencies and official sources would see those technologies at work on a regular basis for their security reasons by screening people for identity verification purposes is the norm!

As far as those blogs I've seen plenty of bogies for other technologies as well as for the pc platform simply created to get the sensation not the actual facts out. Another such blog talked about MS stealing your bandwidth to share updates all over?

Somebody didn't like the fact that MS has changed how they will be delivering each newer version no longer to be seen on optical media but by way of Windows updates was an excuse to get the Paranoid fear mongering going!

Is MS going to be concerned that I just ordered a new 2tb drive from Newegg? I don't think so! Are they trying to get the ball rolling for the latest since they flopped it with 8 when stripping things out by offering a free "Upgrade not Clean install with product key included" deal? Let's see ME was a flop and Vista got a bad rep and many certainly did not like the looks of 8!

So what is MS to do since they rightly fear people who had been glued to XP will now be glued to 7 won't upgrade? Offer a special limited time offer! That was a marketing decision not a spy movie being sold.
