Does anyone know how to keep this set for all windows.

I have to keep setting this every time I go into a different window.

In XP there used to be an option in Tools>Folder options to apply to all folders?

I cant seem to find that.

Cheers!

Hello Lee,

This can help show you how to use the "Apply to Folders" option.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11356-folder-view-apply-folders.html

However, this will not help with "Size all columns to fit" since how it sizes them is specific to the currently opened folder in Windows Explorer. Using "Apply to Folders" will apply the same column sizes set in that folder to all folders with the same folder template. Of course, other folders may need wider or narrower column sizes than the currently opened folder. You pretty much have to set them per folder to have it the right size for them. :(

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Are you in a library when you do this?

If so, then that's why.

Only when Folder Options is opened from within a actual folder window will "Apply to Folders" not be grayed out.

Are you opening Folder Options from within the exact same folder window that you want to have applied to the other folders, and not through the Control Panel or from any other folder?

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able to help if it's a corrupted system file issue.

If you are on my computer "you better not be !" then the folder options are greyed out as the computer is brainless and doesn't know what you are going to do next, So you cant set to all folders because you may have multiple hard drives,USB keys,External appliances,CD,DVD,Dongles, etc. So the only way I can figure out is you go in to the drive you want choose the longest file name you have on there and set the size,Then choose apply to all folders
You will be partly there..
Its not correct or how it should be and when you go back to desk top you will have to set that again for your preferences but that won't affect the drives that you have done.
Repeat for each of your hard drives, etc.
If you find a better way please let me know as it is a pain in the ass.
Regards Zolta0.

Ok once you have the window open right mouse on the column select Size All Columns To Fit then with the control key held down close the window, now when you open that same window again it will already be sized to fit.

sizing all Name column to fit

Instead of control-clicking Size ALL Columns to Fit, try control-clicking Size Column To Fit, having right-clicked on the Name column of course. This is usually the main column I want fully readable anyway and the OS doesn't have to deal with other column categories you have chosen to include in the Details view.
