Solved Slow shut-down.

Using an SSD for the OS and apps my new W7 computer boots in about 15 seconds; however, it takes about two minutes to shut down. Anyone know why?

Hello urban, welcome to sevenforums!

Type MSCONFIG in the start search bar and click it. Select "Diagnostic startup" and restart. then shut down. Time it, and see if the time is shorter. If it is drastically faster, there is perhaps a program or driver having difficulty shutting down with the computer. If you see no difference, try the same idea in safe mode. If it is drastically shorter, there is some program or driver having difficulty.

Try updating all drivers for your system

I've tried shutting down from safe mode and it is the same but I also actually timed it and it was 75 seconds which in comparison to the 15 seconds it takes to boot up feels like a long time but maybe I am chasing my tail here

I would think it was a driver issue. Are you sure you have all the most recent drivers for your computer?

Well, driver wise: it's a brand new computer and my tech administrator is very good at loading stuff - amongst other things; but because some of my peripherals are over ten years old it has been tricky to get the best drivers and etc. Thing is, other than the webcam, nothing new has been added and this seems to be a very recent issue. Plus, printer and scanner are kept turned off, so that just leaves sound card, video card, mouse and keyboard. Take away the S/C and V/C when I did a safe start and what is left. I'll try removing the webcam. Is 75 seconds too long in comparison to a 15 second boot up?

So in safe mode, the computer is worse off than normal? It starts up slower, but what about the the shut down time? Safe mode shouldn't load any peripherals except mouse and keyboard. Try unplugging things that you don't need (except mouse, keyboard, and monitor). Go into safemode without networking and see how long it takes to start up and shut down. This is only supposed to test to see if a potential problem exists with a drier or program, but if there is no difference, then perhaps the issue is more deep.

75 seconds is a really long time, but I wouldn't worry so much about that as it wasn't the problem to start with, was it? It was the shut down time. Check the BIOS. Are you overclocking? Test the BIOS in its default state to see if it helps at all, and you might even consider flashing it.

Going through the windows event logs might help as well. Windows is quite good at pointing out software that might be causing slow boots and shutdowns. Worth a look imho

OK, well done Folks; this forum is proving to be a Godsend (maybe he's the administrator) as I've been able to fix two irritating problems and acquire some very useful software in the two or three days I've been a member. I checked out the tutorials that DavidW7ncus sent me (thank-you David) and my attention was caught by the 'virtual memory pageing file clear' that turned out to be enabled. I disabled it using the software fix-it included and now my shut-down is 15 seconds which is the same as my boot-up time. Well done all of you and thanks. I'll probably be seeing you all again soon. Who is this BRINK? And why doesn't he/she come supplied with all new computers; well done Brink, thank-you.

Kaspersky's to blame

I hadn't conciously activated the Clear Swap File during Reboot so I was surprised to discover that it was active and slowing my shut-down up dramatically.
Then I discovered a default setting in the Kaspersky Privacy Cleanser - which I use regularly - that enables clearing as an additional action. Once activated, it remains that way until you de-activate. Kas users beware!
